Steps to Ship a Car to Messina.
When you first contact an agent you will need to give them the specific details of your automobile including the make, model and year of manufacture. Transport carriers come in various sizes and the car specs need to be accurate so the correct carrier will be used when delivering the car to or from the sea port. You will also need to work with the agent to determine the type of transport that you want to use. There are a couple ways to transport a motor vehicle overseas to Messina from the United States and those ways are:
Roll On Roll Off- Also called RORO by most who use this type of shipping, it is the most widely used way to ship a car across the world and has been very popular since the mid 1970’s due to the fast delivery and affordable shipping rates. Motor vehicles are rolled onto the ship at the exit port in the United States and rolled off the ship at the entry port in Messina. RORO is exceptional for all types of motor vehicles and will provide a safe way to transport your car overseas.
Container- Container shipping, while not used as often as RORO is a common way to ship motor vehicles that may need to be fully protected from the elements during shipment. Cars like classic or exotic are often shipped this way. Large shipping containers that are sealed with protective material are used to haul motor vehicles inside during transport. This way of shipping will cost more than RORO but it will guarantee total protection during transport for your vehicle.
Once the type of transport has been decided, you will be informed of shipping schedules, insurance coverage and the total cost of international shipping for your car. You will also be given a time frame for delivery of the vehicle in Messina. Another added benefit of shipping internationally is that you will often be able to GPS track your car during the entire shipping process so you will know where it is at all times. For information on motor vehicle shipping overseas you can check with the Federal Maritime Convention (FMC) for detailed specifics.
Motor Vehicle Import Regulations.
Shipping a motor vehicle to Messina is fairly simple when you follow the motor vehicle regulations set by the Italian Government. You will need to immediately apply for an individual tax code number as all residents are required to pay taxes. You will also have to pay shipping taxes and import duties however, you can be exempted from the duty fees with proof of vehicle ownership for a year or longer. You will also need to apply for a T2119 registration for used cars or an NP2B registration for new cars with the Auto Club of Italy and register the car and obtain Italian license plates in order to drive in Messina. Both customs officials at the port and the officials at the registration office will need a valid driver’s license. If the license is not Italian you will need to have a statement translating it in Italian. You’ll also have to have your original registration as well as a copy to give to customs agents and you must show proof of residency in Messina. If the4 car is owned by a corporation or business, the name of the official driver must be accompanied with the Certificate of Commerce that will be given to the company for the car registration.
