Documents Required for the Import.
In order to get clearance from customs, you will have to ensure that all the necessary paperwork is completed and submitted in order for the process to take place. Some of the documents which you will be required to provide include:
- Title deed.
- Driver’s License.
- Power of Attorney (this is optional).
- Social Security Card.

Automotive Legal Provisions in Suriname.
It is absolutely essential to keep your documents at hand prior to getting the clearance. Your car has to be less than 5 years old. There are, however, exemptions to this particular rule but you have to have filled out an exemption form and send it to the Ministry of Trade and Labor. Furthermore, there are taxes which are no less than 40% if your vehicle is $25,000 or more expensive. You are also going to need a valid driver’s license.
There is no age restriction on importing used trucks. If your vehicle costs less than $25,000 the tax is going to be about 25%. Once your vehicle gets to the entry point in Suriname, you will have to provide the following information:
- Proxy for clearance.
- Driver’s License.
- Insurance in Suriname.
- Shipping Verification.
- Appraisal of your vehicle with its amount.
You can also contact the Embassy of Suriname in Washington, DC for any further information. You can choose between two shipping methods – RORO and Container shipping. RORO is cheaper and quicker but you can’t ship anything else but your car. As it is secured on the shipping deck, it is also going to be exposed to the elements during the whole period. However, it is cheaper as you only pay for the space occupied by the car. It is driven on the deck using its set of wheels and at the port in Suriname, it is driven down. There are some limitations which need to be followed. You are required to get the vehicle completely clean and the air conditioning gas has to be removed. This is needed as leaving fuel and air conditioning gas inside the vehicle can become a fire hazard.
The other method is container shipping. Though it is more expensive than RORO, it is used when you have an expensive vehicle to move or you want to ship additional goods alongside it.
