Leogane was once one of the most prominent cities in Haiti. During the 2010 Haiti earthquake, more than 90% of the city was destroyed and it is estimated that over 30,000 residents lost their lives. Since 2010 there has been a massive rebuilding effort and business and institutions from around the world have moved in to assist with aid to the residents. The University of Notre Dame in the United States has set up a medical testing facility along with the Centers for Disease Control. The Global Outreach and Love of Soccer (GOALS) organization has a youth outreach program and Johanniter International has set up several medical clinics in the city. Many people from around the world have relocated to Leogane in recent years for volunteer work. There is no public transportation in the city other than bicycle or moto-taxi service, both of which can not only slow travel time, but can also be quite dangerous. The best way to travel through Leogane is by personal car, and shipping your own car to the city when you need to relocate is the best option for getting around during your stay.
Automobile Transport to Leogane.
Reliable automobile transport from the United States to Leogane must be handled by a professional automobile shipper with experience in international automobile transport. Before the car ships out you will want to make sure you have a total price quote from the automobile transport company that has included any pick-up and delivery, cleaning fees, and transport method costs. When your car is picked up to deliver to the shipping port, the driver will complete a full vehicle inspection with you to check for any signs of damage prior to shipping. Make sure that you pay attention and note anything that may be found during the inspection. Your agent will explain the shipping contract and they will need you provide some of the following paperwork:
- Driver’s License.
- Social Security Number (Your card).
- Motor Vehicle Title of Registration.
- Signed Power of Attorney.
If you need the car delivered to your location in Leogane, you have to speak to your agent and make preparations for that prior to the car transport.
How to have your motor vehicle shipped.
You can choose from three very common methods to have a car shipped to Leogane and those methods are the following:
Roll-On Roll-Off – Also called Ro-Ro shipping this is one of the simplest and timely efficient ways to transport a car internationally. Ro-Ro Shipping is a method of transport where motor vehicles are driven onto the ship at the exit post in the United States and then driven off when it arrives at the exit port to Leogane. The vehicle is strapped onto the cargo ship with thick straps to guarantee that it will not roll during transport. Ro-Ro Shipping has long been the most popular way of transporting all makes and models of motor vehicles as well as other items that can be loaded in crates and rolled onto the ship
Container Shipping- Enclosed, or Container Shipping is an excellent choice for people who want to ship personal household or personal items with their vehicle. For shipping one individual car, you will usually need a 20 foot shipping container. You can also use a larger 40 foot container id that will be necessary. Some people opt to share containers with other customers that are shipping their cars to the same area. Container Shipping will cost more than Ro-Ro Shipping because of the fee for the container.
Air Cargo Shipping- If you’re an owner a luxury, exotic or very expensive car or you have personal items that need to ship fast, then Air Cargo Shipping is the top way to ship your car or other items. Air Freight is the most expensive way to ship overseas, and is used less frequently than shipping by sea, but it is an option for those who need the fastest delivery possible.
Motor Vehicle Rules for Imports.
Planning to import a car to Leogane will take some careful planning and you will need to follow the strict guidelines set by both customs in the United States as well as customs in Haiti. U.S. Customs requires export paperwork filed and approved prior to shipping so you need to have that taken care of at least a week, and sometimes two weeks, prior to your shipment date. For Haiti customs you may want to check with the Embassy of Haiti to get updated requirements as they do occasionally change without notice. You will need to provide some of the following paperwork when you are shipping the car:
- Driver’s License.
- Motor Vehicle Title and/or Registration.
- Original Shipping Bill.
- Original Sales Invoice.
- Commercial Invoice.
Taxes are due at the time of shipping and they are charged at rates from 5% to 20% based on the monetary value of the automobile. For more information on tax rates, shipping fees and international transport your representative will be able to provide you with details of all information needed.
