Located in the Karongi District, Kibuye is a large city and the headquarters of the Western Province. Kibuye is close to the eastern part of Kivu Lake and is situated between Gisenyi and Cyangugu. It is approximately eighty-four miles west of Kigali by road. Kigali is the capital of Rwanda and the largest city in this country.
From 2010 to present, Rwanda enforces the Integrated Vehicle Registration System as does many other East African countries. This system allows people to register their vehicle in a more simplified registration process. The import duties are different for residents of Rwanda who may be returning to the country. NGO’s, as well as government assistance and workers and diplomats, can be duty exempt. Importing a vehicle to Rwanda is possible when coming from the United States. You can expect to pay anywhere between $3500 and $7000, depending on several factors that will alter the cost.
There are no restrictions on the age of the vehicle that is brought into the country however the steering mechanism must be on the left-hand side as this is mandatory. If your vehicle is a Toyota, you may find that they are easy to repair in Rwanda due to the popularity of this brand. Other vehicle brands are there as well, though they are not as common so parts may need to be imported when you need them.
The roads throughout Rwanda are rough when you compare them to the roads in the United States and Europe. While some roads are paved, most are not so this is why it’s recommended that you bring a four-wheel drive instead. A1 Auto Transport is aware of the difficult driving conditions and they can assist you in your importing process.

Taxes, Tariffs, and Requisite Documents.
It’s important that you are prepared before your importing process even begins. In order to get ready, you will need to make copies of these documents listed below and be prepared to submit one to United States Customs and one to Rwanda Customs Authority. These include:
- Driver’s license.
- Valid insurance proof.
- Loading Bill.
- Invoice of purchase.
- Origin certificate.
- Current registration.
- The original title to the vehicle.
If you have any other questions, you can contact the Rwanda Embassy to find out more. All UK and US citizens will not need visas, but they do need a certificate stating that they do not suffer from yellow fever.
It is important to consider the taxes that have to be cleared before the vehicle is given in your possession. Some of the taxes include the Customs duty which is charged at 24%, 5%
withholding tax, consumption tax which will vary based on the vehicle and in addition, there is 18% VAT.
Shipping Methods to Rwanda.
Container shipping seems to be the most popular type of transportation when you are moving to Rwanda largely due to the fact that you can place your car inside the container and all your personal and household goods as well. Any room that is left over after the car is placed inside can be filled up with whatever you want to bring with you. You can choose from a 20 foot or 40-foot container.
Roll On/ Roll Off shipping is another alternative. Although this is the most affordable way to ship, it doesn’t offer as much protection as the container shipping method. With RORO, your vehicle is driven on the ship and then driven off once it reaches the port in Rwanda.
