Located in Rwanda, Gitarama is found in the Muhanga District, inside the southern Province. Gitarama is in central Rwanda. It takes approximately twenty eight miles, or forty-five kilometers to travel to Kigali, the capital of Rwanda and also the largest city in this area.
Rwanda now operates using the vehicle registration process effective since 2010. This is the same vehicle registration process that other East African countries use as well. With this agreement, there are a set of rules that must be followed so the process of importing a vehicle is done efficiently.
If you are already a resident of Rwanda and are simply returning home, you can import your vehicle for a decreased duty as long as the vehicle you are bringing back home is not a commercial vehicle. Decreased duty also applies to those who work in non-governmental positions, foreign diplomats, and government aid workers.
As per the Rwanda Revenue Authority, to determine the taxes that you will need to pay when importing your vehicle, figure on 24%-25%, VAT at 18% of the value of the vehicle, additional taxes such as consumption tax and this is based on the price of your vehicle. You will also be responsible for paying the Withholding tax of 5%. The documentation that you will need in order to import your vehicle to Rwanda from the United States or another country are:
- Title to the vehicle.
- Vehicle's registration.
- A copy of your driver's license.
- Invoice of vehicle purchase.
- Bill of Lading.
- Certificate from the place your vehicle was purchased from.
- Your passport or visa.
If you have any questions regarding visa categories, you can contact the Rwanda Embassy to inquire. Those traveling from United States will exempt you from any visa requirements in Rwanda. You will also need to show your certificate stating you have been vaccinated for yellow fever before you enter the country.
Specific import regulations
When importing a vehicle to Rwanda, here are a few things you need to know. There are no age limits on cars being brought into the country. Only left-hand driving vehicles are accepted. If you are wondering about replacement parts for your vehicle while living in Rwanda, Toyota's are an option due to the opportunity to find the parts more easily while living in Rwanda.
When determining what shipping option works best for you, consider the Roll on/Roll off method. This is the most commonly selected method of shipping a vehicle into Rwanda. This method requires that the vehicle be driven onto the deck of the ship and then secured while it makes its voyage downstream to reach its destination port in Rwanda. The cost of this shipping method is the cost of the parking bay only.
Another method of shipping to choose from is the shipping container. This method allows you to pack a container with your vehicle and your personal belongings to be transported from the United States or another country to Rwanda. You can choose a 20 foot container or a 40 foot container. While your vehicle is large, the container will still have room to put belongings that you want to bring over with you. This is the main reason why this shipping method is more expensive.
