Rwanda now operates using the vehicle registration process effective since 2010. This is the same vehicle registration process that other East African countries use as well. With this agreement, there are a set of rules that must be followed so the process of importing a vehicle is done efficiently.
If you are already a resident of Rwanda and are simply returning home, you can import your vehicle for a decreased duty as long as the vehicle you are bringing back home is not a commercial vehicle. Decreased duty also applies to those who work in non-governmental positions, foreign diplomats, and government aid workers.

When determining what shipping option works best for you, consider the Roll on/Roll off method. This is the most commonly selected method of shipping a vehicle into Rwanda. This method requires that the vehicle be driven onto the deck of the ship and then secured while it makes its voyage downstream to reach its destination port in Rwanda. The cost of this shipping method is the cost of the parking bay only.
Another method of shipping to choose from is the shipping container. This method allows you to pack a container with your vehicle and your personal belongings to be transported from the United States or another country to Rwanda. You can choose a 20 foot container or a 40 foot container. While your vehicle is large, the container will still have room to put belongings that you want to bring over with you. This is the main reason why this shipping method is more expensive.
