Located just east of the Lake Abbe, and near the border of Ethiopia, Dikhil is a large town in Djibouti and is about 100 km from the capital city of Djibouti.
You might have your own reasons for relocating to Dikhil on a temporary basis or maybe permanently, but it is important to have your own personal car when you live here. With poor connectivity of public transport and majority of unpaved roads, it helps to import your vehicle from USA when you move.
However, as the laws and taxes on vehicle import keep changing, it is best to refer to the current updates of Djibouti Customs Authority. Exporting and importing a vehicle isn’t possible if you try doing it alone as there are innumerable procedures and documentation that is needed. This is one of the reasons that you need to have reliable shipping service like A1 Auto Transport by your side, assisting you through the processes.
It is essential to notify the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency about your intent to send out the vehicle to Dikhil in Djibouti. Along with the notification letter, you are required to submit a set of documents while the Djibouti Customs Authority will also need. This includes:
- Car title deed.
- Ownership Proof.
- Insurance documents.
- Purchase invoice.
- Copy of Passport.
- EIN Letter.
- Import permit,
Motor vehicle regulations.
You are only allowed to import vehicles that have a left-hand drive as per laws in Djibouti. Most of the laws are flexible but the taxes are fixed on the basis of the engine capacity. For vehicles with 1000cc-1300cc is at 30%, while vehicles over 1800 cc have to pay a hefty tax of 100% of the vehicle evaluated price and shipping charges. If you are unsure about the taxes and other related costs, call A1 Auto Transport service to get a free quote on your shipment.
The regulations states that the owner has to be present when the vehicle arrives but you are allowed to give a Power of Attorney to the shipping service i.e. A1 Auto Transport service to collect it on your behalf. However, the Power of Attorney has been submitted in advance so that the Customs can verify the authenticity.
Additionally, you have two options when you ship your vehicle to Dikhil, Djibouti. Container shipping is the more secure but expensive method. That is because your vehicle will be put within large containers and sealed. This protects it from the harsh weather conditions during transit. On the other hand, RORO is cheaper but you have to ship an empty vehicle. In container shipping, the rest of the space in the container can be used to store your other belongings. But in RORO only a vehicle is shipped which is first driven on the deck, harnessed in place and then driven off.
