What you need to know about Importing to Uganda
You will find that importing to Uganda is not blocked by several rules that you cannot possibly follow. These rules are simple and within reason. Some of these rules and regulations include:
- import a vehicle, regardless of how old/new it is
- can import a vehicle regardless of your age
- can import a vehicle that is driven on the left or right hand side
- A used vehicle will need to pass inspection for roadworthiness as well as emissions
Commercial vehicles are normally imported from Japan while personal vehicles are imported mostly from the United States. Regardless of where your vehicle comes from, you will need to first have it inspected upon arrival to Uganda.
These inspection tests are necessary to ensure that the odometer readings are right and the emissions follow regulations. Your vehicle will need to be inspected before it leaves the United States. You will be issued a certificate if your vehicle passes. Make sure you have these certificates with you when you import the vehicle to show to customs. All paperwork needs to be submitted to the Uganda Revenue Authority. You will also need the following documents:
- Car insurance
- Logbook of your vehicle
- Bill of purchase
- Written inventory
- Your original passport and driver’s license
Taxes and Duties to Pay for Importing

- 15% Import Duty
- 2% Import Communication
- 6% withholding tax
- 10% excise tax
All of these will play a part in how much you pay for your import. However, the exact amount is based on CIF or cost of insurance, vehicle value and shipping charges. Based on that the percentage of tax is levied which has to be paid to the Uganda Customs.
Uganda is landlocked so in order to import, you will need to make the Port of Dar-Es-Salaam in Tanzania your point of destination. You could also choose the Port of Mombasa in Kenya as well.
