The 7th most populated city in Romania, Brasov is located about 100 miles from Bucharest, surrounded by the towering Carpathian Mountains. If you are relocating here from USA, you need to have a personal vehicle to drive around town or to work. However, it isn’t easy to import your vehicle as it sounds as there is a lot of paperwork to complete and procedures to complete.
To start with, you will need to submit documents and get the clearance from the US Customs and Border Protection and then you need to discuss the move with an international shipping service such as A1 Auto Transport as we have over 20 years of experience shipping vehicles globally. There is plenty of documentation that is needed including:
- Lien-free clear title deed issued in USA.
- Purchase invoice of vehicle.
- Work/Residence permit.
- Clear Title deed.
- Bill of Lading.
- Certificate of Residence in Romania.
- Insurance on the vehicle.
- Passport and Proof of ownership.
A similar set of documents and their copies will be required by the Romanian Customs department as they only allow import of vehicles that have been owned for at least 6 months. There may be more restriction and limitations that have to be adhered to and that is why it is important to discuss with us and we’ll guide you on all aspects of the move.

Import duties and taxes.
We will be able to help you with the shipping details and pricing. It is important to understand that apart from freight charges, there are additional charges of vehicle insurance, custom taxes and import duties that are applicable. As per Romanian regulations, there is 17% maximum custom duty and 24% VAT on vehicle imports. The taxes are collected on the basis of the value and price of the vehicle. A standard sedan would be taxed less than a luxury SUV. To know more about the eligibility of your vehicle you can look up the Title 19 of the U.S. Code Of Federal Regulations.
If you are looking to cut costs, it is best to select RORO where your car is driven onboard and secured in the bay and driven off at the port in Romania. It is essential that you steam clean the vehicle so that it is not quarantined at the port. You are required by regulations to remove the air conditioning gas, but leave spare keys, floor mats and car jack in the vehicle. You can know more about the regulations at Embassy of Romania.
Another method of shipping is container freight. Your vehicle and other goods that you need transported to Brasov are put inside 20 feet or 40 feet containers and sealed completely. Cranes are used to lift and load it in the freight ship and unloaded similarly at the destination port.
There are many other regulations that have to be kept in mind and that is why it is good to work with our company, as we have successfully delivered vehicles in different cities in Romania. If you need additional services of ‘port-to-port’ or ‘door-to-port’ services, we’ll be glad to customize it for you. It is better that you know more about the traffic rules before you drive it around.
