In order to transport the vehicle to Malta, you will need to be living on the island for less than six months prior to your import date. You will also need to be the owner of the vehicle for at least six months before shipping it over. If you are a citizen of Malta and are returning after living abroad, you will not be charged any duty taxes for importing. You will, however, need to show proof of your vehicle insurance. The vehicle will need to be registered in the registration and repair log, Your car will need to be inspected upon arriving in Malta by the Transport Malta Agency before you can obtain your car. You will have seven days to have your car inspected once it reaches the port. You have to fill out the VEH01-VEH04 forms before your vehicle can be inspected by the Land Transport Directorate.
In addition to these forms, you will also need to bring the Certificate of Conformity of your car where it was purchased at the original car manufacturer. To determine your registration fee, you need to consider the value of your car and the type of emissions your car currently has. If you are coming to Malta on a long term basis, you will be exempt of paying as long as you provide proof of your Visa when you import. You will need to have a Certificate of Export if you plan to stay in Malta for good. You will also need to apply for residency too. Shipping Methods for Malta.
When importing a vehicle to Birkirkara, you will have two different methods in which to choose from; Roll On/ Roll Off and container. If you choose the Roll On/ Roll Off method of shipping, you will find that it's more affordable however, you will need to prepare your vehicle for shipment in order to avoid delays. This method requires that your vehicle be driven onto the deck of the ship and then strapped down while in transport. Then once it reaches Malta, it will be unstrapped and driven off the ship and into customs charge until it is released to you.
If you choose container shipping, you will be allowed to add personal and household items to your container in addition to your vehicle. The container will secure your items and your car for transport in a safe 20 foot or 40 foot container that is loaded onto the ship. When the ship arrives at the port in Malta, the container is then unloaded by crane and prepared for clearance.
