Vehicle maintenance is important no matter what you drive, but it’s vital for an RV, especially if you take regular road trips. The last thing you want to deal with is experiencing a breakdown when you’re half way to your destination and get tied up during vacation days while have your RV services. Even if you’re a seasoned RV traveler, it’s always good to revisit some of the basic maintenance and upkeep you need to keep an eye on so that you’re in good shape when you hit the open road.
Tires & Fluids
Tires and fluids should be checked and filled to their optimum levels before any road trip or longer drive, especially if it’s been a while since you last drove your RV. Be sure to also check that the lug nuts on the tires are tight.
Test Awnings & Pop Outs
Any awnings, pop outs, or other external components of the RV should be tested before you leave for that next trip. Since these are part of the functionality, and let’s face it, enjoyment, or RV life, it’s important to make sure everything is in good working order before you need to use it. While you’re looking over these things, check the roof for any leaks and inspect seals on the RV too.
Brakes
Brakes are something you’ll want to keep your eye on any time you’re doing regular maintenance on your RV. The importance of brakes is obvious, but faulty brakes can be a real serious problem if you’re driving a large RV or motor home at a high rate of speed and are unable to slow down as quickly as you expect. Be sure to check brakes and bearings annually, especially if you store your RV during the winter.

Battery
A faulty batter can really put a damper on an RV trip, even if it’s just temporarily. Any time spent away from your time away takes a little of the joy out of a trip. Make sure your battery is fully charged and ready to go before any lengthy trips. Remember that batteries do have a shelf life and start losing their charging capacity after a few years so you will have to replace it periodically.
Oil & Filters
Unless you are using your RV on a nearly year round basis, you’ll have to change the oil more frequently than you would for a daily driver. This should be one of the first things you check if your RV hasn’t been started or driven in a while. The same goes for filters, which should be checked regularly as well.
Waste System
The waste system is a critical part of the RV if you plan on camping out for any length of time. Making sure that everything is working as expected, and all that all the necessary chemicals are stocked up and being used properly goes a long way toward providing peace of mind that your next journey will be an enjoyable one with no surprises. The system should also be flushed periodically to prevent problems from clogs and buildup.
