The port is run by an authority from which it gets its nickname from; the Jacksonville Port Authority, in short, JAXPORT. The body has been manning and managing the port since 1963, overseeing its operations which mainly involves car trading. The port handles well over 21 million tons of cargo per year, grossing in heavy income to the Jacksonville Metropolitan Area.
It is the second largest vehicle cargo-handler in the United States, shipping in averagely 656,805 vehicles, the figure being the lowest it has shipped since the year 2008. The relatively young age of the port does not, however, limit it on its vastness. It is the 36th port in USA in ranking by total trade figures of overall shipments done both domestically and internationally through imports and exports. The numbers back up its dominance in shipping cars to or from Port of Jacksonville.
