cost to import household items

You’ll be pleased to learn that import duties can be waived on your household goods, if you satisfy a few conditions. First, your household possessions must have been purchased at least six months ago – and personally used by you during that time. Second, an in-person interview is required. Third, inspection of your cargo is necessary. If you meet all of these requirements and are granted duty exemption, then you won’t be permitted to sell, lend out or get rid of these goods while in Zimbabwe (1).

Paperwork to import household items

You must provide a receipt detailing the freight costs paid for the shipment, plus a full packing list. This should include monetary values (in USD) and be written in English. A separate inventory is also required, and this should list the serial numbers for all electrical goods (2). One excellent source asserts that this inventory should include monetary values as well (3).
Your passport and the Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill for the shipment are also needed. A Residence Permit, Letter of Employment or Work Permit must be presented too. It’s important to note, if you’re entering Zimbabwe under a Work Permit – a Letter of Appointment may also be needed. In fact, this may be a prerequisite for duty exemption, though this isn’t clear (4). For a firm answer on this point, you’re advised to seek out an explanation from customs.
In addition, you’ll likely need to give customs a Form C38 (Declaration of Undertaking). Finally, a Power of Attorney may need to be filed, which permits a destination agent to work with customs on your behalf (5).

Cost to import a vehicle

A clear-cut answer isn’t apparent, when it comes to import duties for vehicles. The International Association of Movers doesn’t mention duty exemption, only stating that import taxes will be based on the vehicle’s details (engine size, year of manufacture and more). The tax range listed is between 100% – 110%, and this will be charged on the CIF value (6).
In contrast, another reputable source asserts that two vehicles can be imported without paying duty. To be eligible for this consideration, you must have purchased the vehicle(s) a minimum of six months ago. You’re also not permitted to sell, lend out or get rid of the vehicle for your first 12 months in Zimbabwe (unless you obtain permission from the appropriate authority within customs).
However, this source goes on to list the same import taxes (100% – 110%) that IAM mentions (7). This seems to indicate that either there are no import duties or these can be waived – but import taxes on vehicles can’t be exempted. However, this assumption is far from certain, and you’re urged to ask customs for clarification before shipping your vehicles.

Paperwork to import a vehicle

You must have your passport and the purchase receipt, when importing a vehicle into Zimbabwe Documentation showing that insurance has been purchased is also required. The vehicle’s title and registration will be needed as well, along with a Change of Residence Certificate (8). A Certificate of Ownership may also be necessary (9).
Customs will also likely request a valid Residence Permit and Form C38 MV. An Immigrant’s Declaration and the Original Bill of Lading for the vehicle shipment must be shown too. The OBL should list some key information, including the engine size, chassis number, make, model, engine number and when the vehicle was made. Finally, an Import License is mandatory, if you purchased the vehicle under six months ago (10).

Tips on how to make your international move easier

  • Work with a moving company. Moving companies have gone through the process that you are currently facing many times in the past so they know what works and what doesn’t.
  • Start preparing for the move early. If your attic is full of things that you know you won’t need in Zimbabwe, start selling or donating them early.
  • Inform your bank, landlord and utility companies. Some banks will freeze accounts if they notice transactions made from far away regions until they hear from you.
  • Update your address and contact details on any online websites that you use to avoid missing any important communication.
  • Cancel any newspaper and magazine subscriptions sending publications to your old home to avoid being charged for services that you are not using.
  • Read about Zimbabwe immigration regulations that affect you and make sure that you have all the necessary documents to prove that you meet all requirements.
