A-1 Auto Transport is one of the best, offering all types of international moving services from car transportation to transportation of general household goods.

customs charge duty on household goods?

One trustworthy source reports that duty exemption is offered for household belongings – provided you meet the required criteria. First, these goods must have been purchased more than 12 months ago. Second, you’re required to already be in the country when your shipment is being processed. Third, you must have a valid Work Permit already in hand (a special pass is an acceptable substitute) (1).
Fourth, the company you’ll be working for within Uganda must request a duty exemption certificate on your behalf. In order for them to do so, you should send all paperwork via expedited delivery, a minimum of 15 days before your shipment enters Uganda. Keep in mind that certain types of goods are not eligible for duty exemption, including foodstuffs.
The going rate for any shipments or items that aren’t granted duty relief is roughly 25%. Whether this includes the 18% value-added tax (plus some possible additional duties) isn’t clear – so you’d be wise to ask customs for further clarification (2).

Will customs ask for specific documents?

A valid tax identification number (or TIN) will be needed, as well as a full packing list. A Letter of Employment and a Work Permit are also required. Your passport and a complete inventory should also be shown. You must sign and date this inventory, and it should list monetary values for your items (3).
Receipts should also be attached for any appliances, or for any goods purchased under six months ago. Customs mandates that your inventory state the serial number for any electronics as well. A valid Residence Permit is also needed, along with a Certificate of Change of Residence. The Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill for your shipment and an Immigration Permit should also be submitted (4).

Will customs charge duty on your vehicle?

You’ll be pleased to discover that duty exemption is offered for vehicles, if you purchased it at least one year ago. For duty-free import, you’re limited to a single vehicle. You also must present a COC Certificate, which verifies that the required inspection (prior to shipping the vehicle) has been carried out.
It’s best if this is performed by an outfit that’s under contract with the Uganda National Bureau of Standards – though this isn’t mandatory. Be aware that some confusion exists, about whether this requirement only applies to vehicles being shipped from Japan or Dubai. It’s possible that Ugandan customs may carry out this inspection instead – so contact them to verify their policy (5).
If you fail to meet any of these requirements, then import duty as high as 57% can be assessed on the vehicle. The exact rate is dependent upon the year of manufacture and its overall condition (6). Keep in mind that even if duty exemption is granted on a vehicle manufactured over eight years ago – a dumping fee of 30% will still apply. Also, if your vehicle’s engine is larger than 3,000 cc’s then it won’t be eligible to have duty waived (7).

Will customs ask for specific documents?

If you’ll be importing a vehicle into Uganda, then you must give customs an inventory, purchase receipt and tax identification number. The vehicle logbook and a valid Certificate of Roadworthiness are also required (8). Your passport and the Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill for the vehicle shipment must be shown as well.
You’ll also need documentation from Interpol verifying that you own the vehicle, if the country of origin is in Southern Africa. A De-Registration Certificate may also be required, along with your employer’s registration papers with the government (9).
This overview of the requirements involved for customs clearance should prepare you for the process. However, it is still prudent to contact them before moving, as they can give you more detailed information.

Tips on how to make your international move easier

Let’s begin by talking about some tips that will make your life easier as you move.

  • De-clutter to ensure the items you bring with you to Uganda are those that you absolutely need and that cannot be found easily in Uganda. You can donate or sell those that you don’t need to make your move cheaper and easier.
  • Prepare a checklist and ensure that it is always within easy reach so that you can quickly add any new ideas that might come to mind as you go about your day to day tasks.
  • Inform your bank about the planned move. Some banks will freeze an account when they see transactions from a region far from where you are expected to be.
  • Check Uganda‘s entry requirements and start looking for the documents and approvals that you will need. Some approvals will take time processing so it’s a good idea to start early.
  • A few weeks before the moving day change your address at your bank, on your online accounts and any other company that sends regular shipments to you. This will give time for any shipments in transit to arrive, while ensuring that new shipments will be sent to the right address.
  • Find a moving company and familiarize yourself with their process.

Why you need a professional moving company when relocating overseas

Getting your Uganda International Moving Services from a professional moving company is always a smart idea. Here are reasons why you should never consider any other approach:

  • When somebody else is handling transportation of your belongings, you free-up time to work on other things like getting a local bank account and getting the new house ready for the goods.
  • Your bulky appliances will not get destroyed along the way because they will be handled using the right tools and equipment.
  • You get protection from any loss or damage of your belongings because the moving company comes with cargo insurance.

How to find the best international moving company

Owing to the large number of moving companies in operation, it is not easy to choose the moving company to work with. Here are a few tips to help you pick the right one:

  1. A good moving company should be licensed and registered to offer these services. Ask them to give you their US DOT number and check it here to verify that indeed they are registered.
  2. A good shipping company should have good reviews from past customers who are happy with the services rendered. Check the reviews on their website to find out how their past customers felt after receiving their services.
  3. What happens when everything does not go as planned? Ask about their process of handling an insurance claim and how long it takes.

It’s my number one pick in auto shipping to this day.

Due to the nature of my work, I must relocate every couple of years to where my company needs me. Because of this, I’ve tested several moving and auto transport companies over the years.

And my choice in terms of auto transport has to be A1 Auto Transport. It’s in the name, but also in the quality with which they do their jobs. I’ve never had a problem with this company.

The only time my shipment was delayed was during winter when a snowstorm closed down all the major roads. And they still found an alternative and got my car delivered before roads got unstuck.

When I moved to West Virginia, they picked up my car the very day I called them. I like to think they take special care of me considering all the business I’ve sent them. I’ll continue to support A1 Auto Transport. It’s my number one pick in auto shipping to this day.

You have my full support and recommendation!

I considered selling my car when I moved to Washington. It was old and rusty, but I grew attached to it. So, I called a couple companies to transport it to my new home, but they both fell through.

The first one couldn’t decide on a schedule. He would constantly change the pickup date till I got frustrated and canceled. The second was insufferable, very rude on the phone, even worse in person.

They started picking a part my car asking me why I still have it. If that’s their opinion of my vehicle, how can I trust they’ll take care of it? If something happened midway, why wouldn’t they just blame it on the car instead of paying up?

So, I cancelled this company as well and turned to A1 Auto Transport. From the get go, they were very different from my past options. Their website was very professional and up to date, full of useful information. I requested a quote using their online form, and I got an email response within an hour. Surprisingly fast!

If I didn’t know any better, I would’ve thought they were lacking customers, but the email spoke for itself. In just one email, everything I needed to know was there, including a contact number I could use to get more information or confirm the transport.

I called and got things rolling. I was very pleased with the driver. He followed standard procedure and represented his company well. Can’t remember his name, but props to him!

The car arrived in Washington 6 days later in excellent condition. From what I understand, the transport was delayed a bit by a storm, but since the time window was 4-6 days from the beginning, I don’t really care. You have my full support and recommendation!

I can safely say this is a legit company that will get the job done.

There are a lot of options for auto transport these days, which surprisingly makes it harder to find a good company. I received more than 10 offers to ship my car, but I couldn’t decide on any of them.

After doing some research, I got even more worried reading about all the scams and accidents that can happen. But, I have work to do and couldn’t afford to drive my newly purchased Mini Cooper all the way to Virginia.

Fortunately, I made the right choice with A1 Auto Transport. They are very good at their jobs. I spent more than an hour drilling Joe with various questions, and he never once lost his patience. He saw I was interested, so he bore with me until I was satisfied. The driver was also very courteous and my car was intact on arrival. I couldn’t have asked for more.

By the way, the price we first agreed on stayed the same. There were no delays or unexpected “surprises.” I can safely say this is a legit company that will get the job done.

We give A1 Auto Transport a big 10 out of 10!

We give A1 Auto Transport a big 10 out of 10! We chose them to move our car from California to Vermont, since we needed professionals.

We were abroad during the transport, so the transport was a bit tricky. The driver had to pick it up from storage on short notice and get it to its destination within at most 10 days. I was happy to note it arrived sooner. We got it 3 days early, right when we got home to pick it up. It made getting around way easier. Awesome service!
