Turkey International Moving Services
We have all had to make a move at one point in our lives. From early moves in your childhood years when you didn’t have much responsibility to more demanding moves like moving to college or relocating to a new town. Most people will agree that moving is not the easiest thing to do. However, regardless of whether you are planning a short stay in Turkey or a more permanent move, hiring professional international movers will help give you peace during the transition period.
How Much Does It Cost to Move to Turkey?
The cost of moving internationally to Turkey can range anywhere from $2,000-$12,000 depending on a variety of factors such as the size of move, total distance, route, transportation method, and current market trends.
The country of Turkey is officially called the Republic of Turkiye. It has a unique position with part of it in Asia and the other part in Europe. If you are moving to Turkey, you might pay between $4,000 and $20,000.
This moving cost will depend on various factors. These factors are considered by moving companies when calculating the moving costs. They include things like the nature of the destination and how quickly you want the items delivered.
The Nature of the Destination
The nature of the destination country will affect the cost of transporting your things there.
If the country you are moving to is difficult to access by sea, the cost of moving there will be higher than if the country had easier access. Also, the security of the route to the country will affect the cost, with less safe routes coming with higher moving costs.
It will be harder for a moving company to transport your items to Turkey from the United States than if Mexico was the destination. This is because the route to Turkey isn’t straightforward when coming from North America.
Urgency
The speed at which you want your items delivered will influence the shipping cost.
The quicker you want your things, the more money you will most likely pay for moving them. This is because it will cost the company you hire more to transport your items quicker than the standard time. A good thing is that if you plan your move early, you won’t need fast shipping.
Expedited shipping services can add as much as 50% to the total moving cost.
Import duty for shipments of household belongings
You can bring household items into Turkey without incurring duty, as long as you meet the criteria set forth by customs. First, your shipment must arrive no later than six months after you relocate to Turkey. If it arrives two months or less prior to your entry into the country, this is also acceptable. Second, you must have purchased these belongings at least six months ago and been personally using them during that time.

Third, residing outside of Turkey for a minimum of the last twelve months is mandatory. Fourth, if duty exemption is granted, you may not sell, lend out to others or get rid of these goods within Turkey. Finally, you must have a Residence Permit good for at least two years (or a lease of this length), to have duty waived on air shipments (1).
Import paperwork for shipments of household belongings
Before customs will allow your goods to enter the country, you must present the necessary paperwork. This includes your passport, a Letter to Customs and a valid Work Permit. A TIN (Tax Identification Number) is also required, plus either a lease contract or proof that you’ve purchased a residence within Turkey. The Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill for the shipment is also obligatory. If you’re traveling to Turkey to marry, then a Marriage Certificate must be shown (2).
Keep in mind that your lease should be good for a minimum of two years - though it’s possible that a Residence Permit is an acceptable substitute. You’ll also need a complete inventory, which includes monetary values and bears your signature and the date.
A separate packing list is necessary too, plus a Power of Attorney if a third party will be interacting with customs on your behalf. You may need to provide a Financial Guarantee Letter as well. Finally, be prepared to give customs a letter from your employer, which states how long you’ll be working for them within Turkey (3).

Import duty for vehicle shipments
It seems that for foreigners wishing to bring a vehicle into Turkey - only temporary import is allowed. You’re permitted to keep the vehicle in the country, for as long as your Work Permit and/or Residence Permit is valid. All extensions of this period must be requested before your permit expires.
Be aware that a number of additional regulations apply, including an arrival deadline (based upon your latest entry into Turkey). Currently, this timeframe is the same as for household goods, which is two months before or six months after your arrival (4). Purchasing a vehicle that was manufactured under three years ago is also mentioned - though this may only apply to diplomats or returning citizens (5).
Bank Guarantee Requirements
A Bank Guarantee will be necessary, for the full amount of the taxes and duties that will be due, should you fail to remove the vehicle from the country upon the expiration of your Work Permit and/or Residence Permit. This Bank Guarantee will be refunded to you, once proof of re-exportation of the vehicle is provided to customs. The exact sum required for the guarantee varies, depending upon the vehicle’s weight, make and model (6).
Licensing Requirements
If you have a U.S. driver’s license in good standing, you can use this for the first 90 days. After this time, you’ll need a Turkish translation that’s been notarized (7). If your Work Permit runs for more than 12 months, then you must procure a driver’s license from the appropriate authorities within Turkey, no later than six months after your arrival.
In order to obtain this document, you’ll need your current driver’s license with a notarized copy, your passport and Work Permit. In addition, you must visit a local hospital to acquire the necessary Health Report and blood type card (8).

Import paperwork for vehicle shipments
When shipping a vehicle to Turkey, you’ll need the vehicle’s registration, your passport and a valid Residence Permit. The Original Bill of Lading for the vehicle shipment is also required. Customs also mandates that you obtain insurance from an outfit within Turkey, and provide proof in the form of an Insurance Certificate or card (9). A Carnet de Passages en Douane (a customs transit book or pass book) may also be requested - though it seems this is only needed when traveling to nations in the Middle East. You must present a Work Permit and your driver’s license as well (10).
The Bank Guarantee mentioned above is also required, along with the vehicle’s title. A Power of Attorney must be given to customs, if a third party will be working with customs in your place. The original purchase receipt for the vehicle is also mandatory documentation. Finally, the Original Bill of Lading must list the chassis and engine numbers, and you may need to provide the owner’s manual for the vehicle (11).
