Import duties at entry for household belongings

You can receive duty exemption, if your household items were purchased at least six months ago. Customs also requires that youโ€™ve been personally using them during this term. Residency outside of Tunisia for a minimum of the last 12 months is also a requisite for duty exemption. A time limit of just three months also applies, and the clock starts when you enter the country.
Customs usually extends duty relief to just a single shipment. You may be able to obtain exemption on an additional shipment as well, but it must enter Tunisia within six months after obtaining a valid Residence Permit. Even then, it appears that duty exemption will be up to the discretion of customs. Keep in mind, that when you leave the country, youโ€™re required to take allhttp://www.iamovers.org/ResourcesPublications/CountryGuides.aspx?ItemNumber=3518 of your belongings with you (1).
The International Association of Movers isnโ€™t quite as clear, when it comes to duty relief on household goods. According to them, you should have documents showing that you own the items in your shipment. A Residence Card and Work Permit also must be provided โ€“ otherwise import tax between 40% โ€“ 60% will be assessed on your shipment (2).
ย

Import documents at entry for household belongings

Youโ€™ll need to have the Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill for the shipment, along with your passport. A valid Work Permit from the Ministry of Employment within Tunisia is also required. Customs will also request your Residence Permit, which the Ministry of the Interior has endorsed (3).
If you donโ€™t have these permits, then both a customs bond and Bank Guarantee will be necessary. Keep in mind that it takes time to obtain the necessary documentation from the government. Entering the country two to three weeks before your goods are due to appear is recommended.
Before your shipment of household belongings can enter Tunisia, youโ€™ll also need a Certificate of Change of Residence and a letter from your employer. A full inventory is required, as well as a separate packing list that should be turned in ahead of time. You should also file an Application for Fiscal Privilege (4). If Tunisia wonโ€™t be your primary residence (just a secondary one), then additional documentation will have to be filed (5).
ย

Import duties at entry for vehicles

One reputable source holds that no duties are charged on vehicles brought into Tunisia โ€“ but states that import tax will apply. The exact amount will apparently be determined by customs agents during clearance (6). Processing time may also be long, as youโ€™re permitted to use the vehicle for up to three months while clearance is underway. Customs also requires that you be there in person for processing, and that your passport have the necessary information about the vehicle stamped inside (7).
ย

Import documents at entry for vehicles

Customs will ask to see the Original Bill of Lading and your passport. The vehicleโ€™s title and registration are also required, plus your driverโ€™s license. A copy of your insurance coverage (valid within Tunisia) is necessary as well (8). Importing a vehicle into Tunisia also means having an inspection, and a written record of this must be provided to customs. This document should state the vehicle type and include the engine number (9).
Itโ€™s always advisable to consult customs directly prior to relocating, as their regulations can be extensive. The rules regarding importation can also shift over time. In addition, hiring an experienced international operator like A1 Auto Transport, will go a long way towards preventing needless clearance delays, problems or fees.

Tips on how to make your international move easier

Letโ€™s dive in and go straight to your move. How do you make the process easier?

  • Moving overseas is not just about packing your belongings into boxes and moving them. There are many logistical requirements and itโ€™s therefore ideal to start preparing early so you can have ample time to get everything ready.
  • Make a checklist. Weโ€™ve already said there are many things you will do before moving. A checklist will help make sure that you donโ€™t forget any of these things.
  • Change your address about two weeks before the scheduled moving day. This will give enough time for shipments that have already been dispatched to arrive while making sure that new shipments are sent to the right address.
  • Let your bank know that you will be moving so they wonโ€™t be suspicious when they see transactions from a different country.
  • Read and understand all the visa requirements for moving to Tunisia.
  • Look for a moving company.

Why you need a professional moving company when relocating overseas

There are two approaches you can take when you need to move to Tunisia. The easier option involves getting Tunisia International Moving Services from a professional moving company. The more tedious one is managing everything yourself. Hereโ€™s why you should go with the first option:

  • Your friends wonโ€™t need to come up with excuses why they wonโ€™t be able to come help you move.
  • With everything done using the right tools and equipment, chances of destroying the larger appliances during the move will be significantly reduced.
  • Youโ€™ll be able to free up time on moving day because you will have fewer activities to do.
  • Should an accident or a loss occur during the move, you will be protected against any liability because the moving companyโ€™s insurance policy will cover the loss or damage.

How to find the best international moving company

When choosing the moving company to provide Tunisia International Moving Services, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Licensing and registration. A good moving company should have a US DOT number that you can use to verify the registration status using this tool.
  2. Find out how long the company you are considering has been in the industry.
  3. What do past customers feel about their services? Read customer reviews on their website or Yelp to know what to expect.
  4. Itโ€™s important to make sure that you understand the process of making an insurance claim and how itโ€™s handled so make sure you ask about this before signing the deal.
