Trinidad And Tobago International Moving Services
Relocation is a concept that is not new to many international companies or individuals who may want to settle in a different country. However, it is often a task that requires a lot of things to be put into consideration. In most cases, a company or an individual will want to transport their valuables. To make this process easier, they may seek assistance from companies that provide international moving services. Such firms may also be able to include car shipping services into their list of services available.
How Much Does It Cost to Move to Trinidad and Tobago?
The cost of moving internationally to Trinidad and Tobago can range anywhere from $2,000-$12,000 depending on a variety of factors such as the size of move, total distance, route, transportation method, and current market trends.
The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is a dual island country situated in the Caribbean Sea, near Venezuela. The cost of moving household items to the country will depend on the size of the apartment you are moving out of.
The moving company also considers other factors when calculating the moving cost, and these factors influence the moving cost. The factors include the cost of shipping a car and the customs fees and duties to be paid.
Customs Duties/Taxes
The cost of customs duties will influence what you are charged for moving your things to the destination.
Customs duties vary widely from country to country, and these fees have to be added to the moving costs, so they are paid at the destination seaport. Customs duties are determined by the destination country and vary from one country to another.
For example, the United States, in most circumstances, doesn’t have customs charges for household items. The EU sets customs duties only for countries coming into the EU from outside the Union. Most items imported into Trinidad and Tobago have customs duties of 20% of the value of the items.
Shipping A Car
In the case of shipping a car with your household goods, your moving costs will be higher.
Shipping a car isn’t the same as shipping household goods. The insurance required for a car is usually higher, and the method of loading is also different. These differences usually lead to an increase in moving costs.
You will likely experience a significant increase in moving costs if you include a car in your load.

Duties you’ll face during clearance for household items
At least according to one credible source, you can have the typical import duties waived on shipments of household belongings. To receive this type of consideration, you’ll need to prove that you purchased these goods at least 12 months ago. You can submit purchase invoices for your items, or other paperwork that establishes when you bought them.
A piece of advice that you may want to consider when shipping goods to Tobago, is to choose Port of Spain (in Trinidad) as your port of entry instead. If you decide to go this route, then your Original Bill of Lading for the shipment should clearly state that the end destination is Tobago (1). You should also know, that you must have a valid Import License, if you wish to bring in a refrigerator (or any appliance that uses gaseous refrigerant for cooling) (2).

Documents you’ll have to provide during clearance ,
Before customs will authorize your shipment to enter the country, you must submit all of the necessary paperwork. Customs will request a complete inventory and your passport. If your shipment contains any belongings purchased under 12 months ago, then their monetary values must be provided. A valid Work Permit may be necessary, though this doesn’t seem to be required in all cases.
The Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill is also mandatory documentation. It’s possible that you may have to show an Importer Registration number as well (3). A customs bond may be imposed too, as well as a deposit in cash. You also must have documents establishing residency abroad for at least the last 12 months, as mentioned above (4).
Duties you’ll face during clearance for a vehicle
On this point sources diverge, with one stating that only citizens or diplomats may bring a vehicle into Trinidad and Tobago (5). The International Association of Movers, a highly reputable source of information, doesn’t make any mention of this limitation. It does not, however, explicitly say that foreigners are permitted to import vehicles into the country (6). With unclear accounting of the rules governing vehicle importation – the sensible course of action is to contact customs for yourself.
If you discover that importing a vehicle is allowed in your case, be aware that value-added tax (VAT), duty and other taxes apply. Ownership of the vehicle for at least six months before it enters port is also required by customs. You’re also prohibited from selling the vehicle (or even giving it away) for the next two years. Finally, if a vehicle was manufactured over five years ago, it isn’t eligible for import (7).
Documents you’ll have to provide during clearance
You should have the vehicle’s registration, the Original Bill of Lading for the shipment and a valid Import License. When shipping a vehicle to Trinidad and Tobago, customs will also need to see documentation establishing your residency abroad (8). The purchase receipt for the vehicle is required as well, along with the title. Finally, be prepared to give customs an affidavit from a commissioner within the country (9).
Information regarding customs procedures can be less than complete, due to the sometimes detailed nature of their clearing process. Customs regulations are also subject to alteration or amendment. Consequently, it’s always advisable to ask customs what will be required for your specific shipments.
