Ah, Brexit. It is the gift that just keeps giving. For the UK, Brexit represents a massive change to how the country relates to members of the European Union. UK residents will no longer share a common currency (farewell to the Euro) and will be subject to new rules for travel and importation. These Brexit rules are still in negotiations, so this guide will focus on the existing EU rules that will expire at the end of 2020.
Moving from France to the UK under EU rules lets UK citizens take advantage of EU benefits. Under EU rules, citizens of EU member countries can move freely without the need for visas or complex customs declarations and duties.
After Brexit, the rules governing imports and movement between European countries will need to be negotiated on a country-by-country basis by the UK government. This means that the rules for France could be different than those for Switzerland.
What’s the most important thing to know right now about moving from France to the UK? You should do it before the end of the year, if at all possible, to take advantage of the EU rules.
How Can I Import Personal Items to the UK?
The geography of France gives you many options for shipping your personal goods. The country shares a border with eight different countries, and is surrounded by the Northern Sea, Mediterranean Sea, English Channel, and the Atlantic Ocean.
What are your shipping options? You can ship your belongings over land – Europe has one of the best railway systems globally; or over the sea – France has multiple ports on the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. You could even fly your goods to the UK, although this option is cost-prohibitive for most consumers.

How Do I Import Personal Items to France?
If you have been a resident of France for at least the past year and intend to move your primary personal residence to the United Kingdom, you can import your personal goods tax and duty-free.
The UK does not currently have special requirements for importing goods from other EU nations. You still can’t bring prohibited or restricted goods (firearms, drugs, etc.) with you, and you will need to provide a detailed declaration of your imported goods.
These rules are subject to change pending Brexit negotiations. Contact your local customs officials for updated guidance.
How Do I Import a Vehicle to France?
EU residents can import a vehicle to the UK for personal use without paying duty. However, new vehicles (purchased less than three months ago or with less than 3000 km on the odometer) are subject to Value Added Tax (VAT) unless you have a valid receipt showing that VAT has already been paid in your country of origin. You will need to provide proof of ownership for your vehicle, such as a clear title.
