Does Switzerland charge duties on household goods?

You can import your used household belongings without incurring duty, provided you fulfill some conditions. Customs requires that you transfer your permanent place of residence into the country, and this must occur before your shipment is cleared for entry. You also must have purchased your household items a minimum of six months ago, and been personally using them in your origin country abroad during this time (1).

If you receive duty exemption, then you arenโ€™t allowed to sell these goods for the next 12 months. Also, if you donโ€™t have all of the required paperwork to obtain exemption ready at the time of processing โ€“ then a deposit or fee will be required. Technically, you have 2 full years after moving to Switzerland to import your belongings, but this is only if youโ€™re granted an extension from customs. If youโ€™re planning to bring in a second shipment, it should be included on the inventory submitted for your first shipment (2).

What paperwork is required by Swiss customs?

In order to properly process your shipment, customs must have your passport and the Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill for your shipment. A valid Work Visa and/or Residence Visa is required as well. Customs also needs to see a copy of your rental contract, or proof that youโ€™ve purchased a residence within the country (3).

Customs form 18.44 must be signed by you and submitted, which requests that duty relief be granted on your shipment of household belongings. A Residence Permit will also be needed, unless youโ€™re moving from the EU (and perhaps even then). Customs also requires you to have a registration document, from the town hall in the local municipality where youโ€™ll be living in Switzerland (4).

A detailed inventory that includes items in any additional shipments expected is also necessary. This inventory must list the brand, model and serial number of all appliances โ€“ and bear your signature and the date. If youโ€™re importing any alcohol, then a Supplemental Declaration concerning these goods is mandated by customs. A Declaration of Household Goods should be provided as well (5).

Does Switzerland charge duties on vehicles?

Sources diverge on this point, with one only mentioning duty exemption for company-owned vehicles (6). Another trustworthy source disagrees, stating that you only need to have purchased the vehicle at least six months ago (and been using it during that time).

If you are granted duty exemption, then you wonโ€™t be permitted to sell the vehicle for the next year. Youโ€™ll also be required to sign a declaration to this effect. Customs also reserves the right to deny entry to any vehicle they wish and all vehicle imports must adhere to Switzerlandโ€™s technical requirements (7).

What paperwork is required by Swiss customs?

Customs will ask for the Original Bill of Lading, a Residence Permit and your driverโ€™s license. Customs form 18.44 is also required, along with your passport. The purchase receipt for the vehicle and proof that the required inspection has taken place are also mandatory. A copy of your insurance policy should be shown as well (8). Importing a vehicle into Switzerland also requires a valid Work Permit and a shipment inventory. The vehicleโ€™s title and registration (issued in your origin country) are necessary documentation too (9).

It may be clear from the above discussion, that customs clearance requires careful planning and attention. Attempting to go through it alone isnโ€™t recommended โ€“ as a knowledgeable international moving company like A1 Auto Transport will make the undertaking far more manageable. Itโ€™s also an excellent idea to ask customs about your shipments, and the specific regulations you will encounter.
