Sweden International Moving Services
Changes may call for a business or an individual to relocate to a different country. International moving can be a long and daunting process to undertake alone. This is where professional moving companies who provide international moving services meet this need. Shipping a car to Sweden or transporting your goods is made easy when you hire a good shipping company.
How Much Does It Cost to Move to Sweden?
The cost of moving internationally to Sweden can range anywhere from $2,000 - $12,000 depending on a variety of factors such as the size of move, total distance, route, transportation method, and current market trends.
A one- to two-bedroom apartment in Sweden can cost between $3,500 and $7,000, and a three- to four-bedroom house can cost between $8,000 and $12,000. When it comes to moving expenses, such as customs taxes, storage, and moving insurance, it is not only the cost of relocating that must be considered:
The Size of Your Move
The overall weight of your cargo is one of the first factors that moving companies consider when estimating the cost of an international transfer. You'll need a lot of storage space if you're moving internationally. When a huge number of products are shipped, the cost of each shipment rises proportionately. Homeowners who are relocating to another nation frequently downsize in order to save money on shipping.
Moving Insurance
Most moving companies will offer a basic amount of insurance coverage for your relocation as part of the price they charge you. Moving insurance can cost anywhere from $100 to $1,000 or more, depending on the total value of your package and the route it will take. However, it is strongly advised that you purchase additional moving insurance to secure your shipment, as replacing damaged valuables may be more difficult or expensive once you have moved away from your current location.
Visa Fee
Before beginning on an international transfer, it is critical to check your legal status to ensure that your new residence is safe and legal for you to dwell in. Even if it appears straightforward, obtaining a visa is more expensive than many ex-pats understand. You may need to apply for a separate foreign visa depending on your destination. In some cases, you may need to pay an immigration lawyer to help you file your visa application, which increases your visa fees.
Route
Distance and route are not the same thing, despite appearances. Several ports offer as great beginning points for cross-country relocations due to their increased popularity and ease of access. Moving to a less-traveled location, on the other hand, will need your team to pay a larger delivery fee. Furthermore, the moving company will charge you based on the route you take to your new place.

Does Swedish customs charge duty on household items?
You can have the duty that would be levied on your shipment waived, when bringing used household goods into Sweden. To be eligible, you must have purchased these belongings a minimum of six months ago and been personally using them during that time. Customs also requires that you’ve been living outside of Sweden (and possibly the EU as well) for a minimum of the last 12 months. Other requisites include having registered a place of residence within the country and entering Sweden before your goods arrive (1).
In fact, according to the International Association of Movers, duty relief is only available if you’ve already been living within Sweden for a minimum of the last year (and it was your permanent place of residence). However, this stipulation is a little fuzzy – as IAM also mentions a time limit of just 12 months after moving into the country to import goods without paying duty (2). It’s quite possible that merely the intention to live in Sweden for at least a year is what’s required instead (3). To clear up this confusion, you’re advised to seek out an answer straight from customs.

What paperwork is required for household items?
A Foersaekran (the Swedish customs form) and your passport must be provided. You’ll also need a full inventory written in either Swedish or English, along with a valid Residence Permit. Customs also requires you to register with the Swedish Tax office, and you must submit a stamped copy of this document to customs. The Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill for your shipment is necessary as well.
You should have a copy of your rental contract and/or a Letter of Employment too (4). This letter should confirm that your work contract runs for at least 12 months, as mandated by customs. If a third party will be interacting with customs in your place, then you also must file a Power of Attorney (5).
Does Swedish customs charge duty on vehicles?
It appears that duty exemption can be obtained, when shipping a vehicle with your household belongings. However, whether or not customs grants duty relief doesn’t seem to be certain (6). It’s also clear that you will definitely incur duty, fees and VAT if your vehicle isn’t part of your shipment of household items (7). Therefore, it’s important that you combine these, if you wish to receive exemption for your vehicle import.
Customs also enforces various regulations, including the requirement that you not sell the vehicle for a full year. You’ll also need to have documentation showing insurance coverage was in place for the past 12 months. Buying the vehicle a minimum of one year before shipping it to Sweden and personally using it during this term are both mandated by customs as well (8). However, another reputable source reports that six months is sufficient – so you’re urged to ask customs which figure is correct. Finally, a limit of a single vehicle per adult is imposed (9).

What paperwork is required for vehicles?
The Original Bill of Lading and a driver’s license are required, when importing a vehicle into Sweden. You must have the vehicle’s title and registration as well. A copy of your insurance policy from your origin country is also needed. The Original Bill of Lading and a customs form just for your vehicle should be submitted (10). Customs also requires that you purchase temporary insurance from a Swedish underwriter and provide proof of this coverage. The purchase receipt for the vehicle must be presented to customs as well (11).
Moving to another country takes a good deal of planning, and you should be prepared to face some logistical challenges. This is why working with an experienced international shipping company like A1 Auto Transport is so critical – as we can help you through every step of the process. In addition, it’s important that you talk over your upcoming relocation with Swedish customs. They have the most up-to-date information, regarding their import regulations and fees.
