A reliable and reputable mover will take up the tasks related to the move and will also take care of shipping your car to the Republic of the Congo.

Shipments of household goods and import duty

You can bring in used household belongings free of any duty, as long as you purchased them at least six months ago. Customs also requires that youโ€™ve been personally using them during this time. Another requisite for duty exemption is having resided outside of the country for the last 12 months. Further, you must bring these goods in no later than six months after your entry into the Republic of the Congo (1).

You also must send all the necessary paperwork (and originals) to the destination agent beforehand. If they donโ€™t have these documents 15 days before your shipment arrives, you wonโ€™t be issued a Certificate of Free Entry from the primary customs office. Also, be aware that even for duty-free shipments, a couple of specialized taxes still apply. These are a 2% computer tax and an assurance tax of 0.8% (2).

Shipments of household goods and import paperwork

A number of documents must be submitted to customs, in order for your shipment to be cleared for entry. Customs will ask to see your passport, packing list and Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill. A Letter of Employment and a Certificate of Change of Residence (from the municipal authorities within your country of origin) are also required. Another letter detailing your job transfer may also be needed.

You must obtain a Work Permit from the Ministry of Labor, and a Certificate of First Settlement from the Immigration Department. An ECTN (Electronic Cargo Tracking Note) is mandatory as well, or a BESC (Bordereau Electronique de Suivi de Cargaison). Finally, you should provide a comprehensive inventory with values included - which is to be written in French and bear your signature and the date (3).

Vehicle shipments and import duty

Dependable sources make reference to a possible duty exemption, saying that without this a duty of 54.1% will be incurred. There is no mention of how duty-free import can be obtained - or whether this is even possible at all (4). Therefore, youโ€™re advised to consult customs, to determine if exemption is available for your shipment.

Vehicle shipments and import regulations

Customs mandates that the Original Bill of Lading for your vehicle shipment list certain key information. This includes the engine and chassis number, engine displacement, year, make and model. Any vehicles manufactured 7 years ago or more, cannot be imported into the country (5).

Vehicle shipments and import paperwork

You must present the purchase receipt for the vehicle being imported, along with the Original Bill of Lading. Customs may also want to see a receipt for the shipping costs. A Non-Sale Certificate confirming that you wonโ€™t sell the vehicle within the country is required too (6). Both the title and registration which were issued in the origin country should be shown as well (7).

Since not every form or procedure has been covered here, itโ€™s important that you talk with customs before moving. They will be able to provide a definitive list, of all the requirements youโ€™ll face when attempting to clear your shipments through customs.

Tips on how to make your international move easier

Conduct plenty of research on all that relates to your move. Know the best time to ship considering the climatic conditions, the documents required and the customs regulations. Package your belongings well and label them properly so that the movers may have an indication of how to handle and store them. If you are shipping a car you need to also prepare it by washing it, doing an inspection and conducting a maintenance check. Research on the transportation rules and make good use of the resources found at the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) site or by enquiring from the Republic of the Congo embassy.
