Duties you’ll face when bringing in household items

You won’t be able to import a shipment of household belongings into Peru, without incurring duty. Sources are divided on the current duty and tax rate charged by customs. One states that the scale either begins at 12%, or possibly that this is approximately the rate you will pay (1).

Another qualified source asserts that you should expect to pay around 20% instead, for import duties and taxes combined. This rate holds true for the first of each type of electrical appliance. However, if you bring more than one of a comparable appliance into Peru – you’ll incur a 33% rate on every additional unit (2).

Regulations you’ll face when bringing in household items

Though your shipment can enter port a full month before you arrive in Peru – the clearance process cannot begin until you are present. Your shipment is also allowed to arrive after you do – but four months is the permissible limit according to the International Association of Movers (3). A different source has this limit at six months instead, so you should speak with customs to determine which figure is correct (4).

Documents you’ll need when bringing in household items

Getting your shipment through customs clearance will require your passport, packing list and Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill (5). This OBL or AWB is required to list the total weight of your shipment, something called the consigned net and clearly indicate that it contains used household belongings.

You will also need a Resident Visa or a Work Contract from a business sanctioned to operate by the Ministry of Labor. Customs will also accept a Certificate of Marriage, proving you’ve wed a citizen of Peru. A comprehensive inventory (which is in addition to the packing list already mentioned) is mandatory as well (6).

Duties you’ll face when bringing in a vehicle

Well-informed sources disagree on this point, with the International Association of Movers stating that duty-free import is possible. To be eligible, the engine must be 2,000 cc’s or less. It also must be valued within the range established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as being permissible for duty-free importation. However, it’s somewhat likely that this kind of duty exemption is only reserved for diplomats (7).

Other sources indicate that duty cannot be waived, with a rate of 79% being charged on used vehicles. The rate is significantly less for new vehicles, at just 38% duty instead. These fees are levied on the CIF value, which is the cost of the vehicle, plus insurance and freight (8).

Customs also bars vehicles manufactured more than 4 to 5 years ago from entering Peru. Even if your vehicle falls within this age limit, if it has over 80,000 kilometers on the odometer – then it’s also eligible for importation (9).

Documents you’ll need when bringing in a vehicle

Shipping a vehicle to Peru requires the correct paperwork, including the purchase receipt, Original Bill of Lading and a signed customs declaration form (called a DUA) (10). You also must have your passport and a RUC (or Tax ID number). Customs also demands certain mechanical verifications, which have been performed by an approved source (11).

VERITAS or SGS are acceptable service providers, and they must determine the vehicle’s emissions and give you an Inspection Certificate. A separate technical sheet must also be obtained, from an engineer within the country that’s been approved to provide this document (12).

In addition, you should give customs the vehicle’s title and registration, along with proof of insurance coverage (or a written explanation for why it hasn’t been purchased). If your vehicle isn’t new, then a Declaration of Value is also necessary (13).

A large number of additional paperwork requirements and regulations apply, when importing shipments of household goods or a vehicle. Therefore, you should touch base with customs, as they can provide a full accounting of what will be needed to clear your shipments.
