Nicaragua International Moving Services

Planning to move from the US to Nicaragua? International moving comes with its load of challenges. In fact, it is not as easy as just hoping from one state to another. This is due to challenges such as those governing customs and overall logistics. Most people therefore, prefer to hire professional movers as opposed to handling everything on their own. We are an international moving company that will take care of your relocation abroad as well as ensure your vehicle is shipped safely.

How Much Does It Cost to Move to Nicaragua?

The cost of moving internationally to Nicaragua can range anywhere from $2,000-$12,000 depending on a variety of factors such as the size of move, total distance, route, transportation method, and current market trends.

It depends on a number of factors, such as the size of the dwelling to be abandoned, how much household goods need to be relocated from the United States to Nicaragua. Approximately $3,000 to $9,000 would be needed to relocate a family to Nicaragua in a two-bedroom house.

In addition to the house's size, other aspects must be considered. A number of factors need to be considered. Transporting, storing, and insuring goods overseas may incur all of these costs.

Storage

Undoubtedly, you will be responsible for shipping and storing the item. Your shipment may arrive ahead of schedule even if your transfer is precisely planned. In this case, you will have to store your personal belongings. Spending more money on storage is inevitable if you need to store more stuff.

Insurance

The kind of insurance you require will depend on the particular circumstances of your relocation. For example, if you are planning to ship your products by boat, you will have to select a marine policy. Most moving companies do not give out insurance quotes. If you want to know if the items you are transporting are protected, check your insurance coverage. You will obviously pay a higher rate if the more valuable your belongings are.

International Shipping

It is pertinent to realize that people do not necessarily know how to plan for the transfer of their belongings across borders. Generally, moving can be summarized into two steps: packing your possessions and loading your moving vehicle. It is critical to use a moving company with experience in international shipping if you want the procedure to run smoothly. International shipping is one of the most expensive components of relocating overseas. If you are relocating overseas, you should expect to pay between $1,000 and $10,000.

Are duties incurred when importing household items?

The laws governing import taxes and duties for Nicaragua are complex - meaning a variety of outcomes are possible. Whether or not you can be exempted from these fees, will depend upon your particular situation.

Exemption for Renters or Retirees For example, the International Association of Movers states that according to the Law of Retired Residents or Rented Residents - you can request that a shipment with a CIF value of up to $25,000 have import taxes waived. You can include a vehicle with your request, though whether it must fall within this $25,000 limit isn’t clear.

To be eligible for this exemption, you need $600 a month in retirement pension income or $750 of income from a business (or perhaps an investment account). It seems you’ll also need a valid Residency Card and to fulfill all the criteria set forth in Law 694 (1).

Other Exemptions However, IAM says elsewhere that household belongings are charged import taxes - unless you request an exemption under migratory, tourism incentive or travel regimen law (2). It does makes sense that the Retired Residents or Rented Residents Law is among the rules which make it possible to have import fees waived. Yet, because this isn’t explicitly stated, confirming your exemption status with customs before moving is the best course of action.

Tax Rates For Non-Exempt Shipments Another knowledgeable source doesn’t mention any kind of duty and tax exemption, at least if you’ll be working for a company within Nicaragua. If you have a work contract that’s temporary, then expect to pay import taxes of 50.5% to 65.5%. If you don’t have a contract and aren’t eligible for tax exemption, then your rate will range from 65% to 80% (3).

Documents Needed For Moving

Are specific documents requested for household items?

Customs must be supplied with your Residence Visa, passport and Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill. A Letter of Authorization, paperwork confirming your employment and a detailed inventory are also required. This inventory should list the values for your items, and include the serial number, purchase price, make and model for all electrical goods. If you wish to have import duties waived, then a Duty-Free Exemption obtained from the Ministry of Finance (and approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) is necessary. However, this may only apply if you have diplomatic status (4).

Be sure to include a separate packing list with your documentation. You may need a Residency Card as well, though the Residence Visa might satisfy this requirement. However, if you wish to receive tax exemption under the Retired Resident or Rented Resident Law - then it appears that a Residency Card is mandatory. Keep in mind that the Institution of Tourism must authorize this type of tax exemption (5).

Are duties incurred when importing a vehicle?

Unless you have diplomatic status, you’ll need a Tax Exoneration to import your vehicle without these fees. The reputable sources consulted did not specify the requirements or procedures necessary to receive this type of Tax Exoneration (6).

Therefore, you should speak with customs to learn if this is possible in your case. You may wish to ask them whether exoneration can be granted under the Law of Rented or Retired Residents - as we covered above that tax-free entry of your vehicle may be possible in this instance.

If you aren’t granted tax relief on your vehicle, the import charges will vary based upon the engine size, year of manufacture, model and monetary value. Keep in mind that all vehicles (whether tax exempt or not) being imported into Nicaragua, cannot be more than 10 years old (7).

The only exceptions to this rule for foreigners, are vehicles being donated to certain organizations, vehicles with a classic designation or vehicles intended to haul passengers or goods (8).

Are specific documents requested for vehicles?

You’ll need the vehicle’s title and registration, as well as the Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill. A valid passport and the purchase receipt for the vehicle are also required. If you have a Tax Exoneration, then you should also present this to customs. If the Institution of Tourism has granted you a Tax Exoneration because you meet the guidelines of the Law of Retired or Rented Residents - then they will provide you with a Resolution. This Resolution should be included in the paperwork that you submit to customs (9).

While a good deal of the regulations, procedures, fees and filing requirements you’ll face when clearing Nicaraguan customs have been covered above - this discussion is hardly comprehensive. Customs has extensive rules in place and the process can be complicated and involved. For these reasons, you’re urged to speak with them directly, to learn more about the requirements for your particular shipment.

Tips on how to make your international move easier

Plan in advance: There is nothing as frustrating as a last minute rush. It might cause you to not attend to many important aspects. To avoid this, start preparations 90 days before the day of moving. This will give you more than enough time to ensure everything is in order, and that nothing has been left unattended.

Find the right shipping company: To find a good shipping company, start by doing a Google search for professional movers near you. Also, you can ask family and friends for recommendations. Make sure you do an analysis of factors such as costs, customer reviews, and whether those companies are licensed before you settle on one.

Visa and passport: Inevitably, a visa and a passport are mandatory when moving abroad. When looking for Nicaragua International Moving Services, it is wise to look for a mover who offers help in applying for a visa and a passport. Alternatively, to apply for a visa, you can visit the Embassy of Nicaragua in Washington DC or visit their website.

For your passport, ensure that you apply through the US Government.

Check on costs: It is inevitable that you will spend during your international relocation. However, to ensure that you are not caught in financial straits, apply for jobs before you leave for Nicaragua.

There are a lot of options for auto transport these days, which surprisingly makes it harder to find a good company. I received more than 10 offers to ship my car, but I couldn’t decide on any of them... Fortunately, I made the right choice with A1 Auto Transport.
