Before delving into the duties for importing household goods into Mauritania, it’s important to note that the U.S. State Department has issued a Level 3 Travel Advisory for this nation. This advisory level signifies that they believe you should reconsider your travel plans, due to the threats involved (1).
If you still plan to proceed, the requirements to receive duty exemption are simple and straightforward. Customs only mandates that you’ve owned your household items for a minimum of six months, in order to be eligible for duty-free import.
Be prepared for customs to inspect your cargo, as they can do so at their discretion. Also, it’s important that the Original Bill of Lading for your shipment correctly list all of your goods (2). In addition, you should be at the port or point of entry while customs is processing your shipment (3).
Certain paperwork must be submitted to customs, before your shipment can enter the country. You must have a valid passport, Residence Permit and/or a letter from your employer. The Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill for your shipment is also required, along with a packing list.
A separate inventory which is written in French and includes monetary values, your signature and the date is mandatory as well. A Non-Sale Certificate and receipts for any electronics purchased under six months ago are also necessary (4). You may also need a sponsor within Mauritania to write you a formal Invitation Letter, which you will present to customs (5).
According to knowledgeable sources, you can temporarily import a used vehicle without paying duty (6). If you wish to permanently import a vehicle, however, then you will be charged duty for the privilege. The rate is currently 50% for used vehicles and 78% for new ones.
Be aware that used vehicles manufactured nine years ago or more, are not allowed into the country. Also, all pertinent documentation must be in the destination agent’s hands, at least a full week before importation (7).
Once again the regulatory and documentation requirements for importation are quite minimal. You’ll just need your passport, Change of Residence Certificate, proof of insurance and the registration card for the vehicle (8). The vehicle’s title and purchase receipt are also required (9).
