Does customs charge duties on household items?
Since Lombok is part of Indonesia (specifically the West Nusa Tenggara province), looking to Indonesia’s import duty policy is the right course of action. Indonesian customs does offer duty exemption for household goods, as long as certain guidelines are followed.
They must be acquired at least one year prior to import, and personally used by you during that time. Customs also offers duty relief on just one shipment by air and one over the water. Your shipment must enter Indonesia within three months of the issuance date for your KITAS card and Temporary Work Permit (IKTA). Last of all, for duty-free goods that enter the country, selling of these items is forbidden (1).
Does customs require specific paperwork?
While processing your household goods for entry, you must give customs the Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill. Your passport with visa pages and a comprehensive packing list must be shown as well (2). You’re required to take this list to the Indonesian Embassy in your home country before leaving, and have it stamped by the officials there (3). The packing list should also be faxed to the destination agent well ahead of your shipment’s scheduled arrival.
A valid Temporary Residence Permit (KITAS card) and Work Permit (IKTA) are mandatory documentation too (4). A RPTKA could be required in place of the IKTA, but this may only be for employers (not employees) (5). Regardless of the permits mandated by customs for your situation, they must not expire for at least one year. A Non-Negotiable Bill of Lading also seems to be necessary, which is apparently different from the OBL already mentioned (6).
This list of paperwork requirements isn’t definitive, and additional documents will be needed. Consult customs for more specific information pertaining to your exact shipment.
Does customs charge duties on vehicles?
Foreigners entering Indonesia aren’t allowed to bring a vehicle into the country, except in a few very limited instances. These are either participating in or owning a business that’s related to vehicles in some way, or having diplomatic immunity (7).
In fact, some reputable sources state that only foreign citizens with diplomatic clearance and PP-8 status are qualified to import a vehicle (no mentions of business purposes of any kind are made) (8). Therefore, if you’re planning to ship a vehicle to Indonesia for your vehicle-related business, you should talk to customs beforehand.
Does customs require specific paperwork?
You must present the vehicle’s title and registration, along with Form PP-8 (only if you have diplomatic status) (9). The well-regarded International Association of Movers indicates that this PP-8 document is a Letter of Approval issued by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs instead - and not a simple form.
Customs will also request your passport, the Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill for the shipment and a full packing list. You’re instructed to visit the Indonesian Embassy in your country of origin before leaving, to have this list stamped (but this may only apply to diplomats) (10). The purchase receipt for the vehicle is mandatory as well (11).
This accounting is not comprehensive, and additional documentation may be needed. Speak to customs for more information about the requirements for your specific shipment.
