How Much Does It Cost to Move to Jamaica?
The cost of moving internationally to Jamaica can range anywhere from $2,000-$12,000 depending on a variety of factors such as the size of move, total distance, route, transportation method, and current market trends.
Jamaica is a Caribbean Island nation surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. If you are moving to the country, then know that the moving cost can be as low as $2,800 and as high as $10,300. You will need a moving quote to know the exact amount of money you will pay for moving.
The moving cost to Jamaica isn't determined by a single factor, but by a combination of factors. This is why you will need a moving quote to have an idea of what moving to the country will cost you. Legal fees and the shipping method you use will affect the shipping cost.
Legal Fees
If you require legal assistance, then you can be sure that it will affect the overall cost of moving to Jamaica.
Some people need legal assistance in filling out the paperwork that international shipping comes with. It is always better to get legal assistance so you understand the agreements and insurance documents you are signing.
You might also need legal assistance if you are moving items that are restricted in Jamaica.
The Shipping Method
The method that is used to move your items will also play a role in the overall moving cost to Jamaica.
There are various methods for moving your items, and they all have different costs. For example, high-priority moving services won’t cost the same as standard moving services. High-priority will require more resources from the moving company, so you will be charged more for it.
If you are moving on a tight budget, ask the moving company what they have as a budget-friendly moving option.

Duties when shipping your household belongings
You can receive import duty exemption, if your household belongings have been owned and personally used by you for at least the last six months. Customs only gives you three months to bring your goods in without paying duty - after which time you’ll need to renew your C27 Form.
If you aren’t fortunate enough to be granted duty exemption, then expect to pay between 5 - 40%. An additional Consumption Tax of 15% can also be imposed, though this seems to be based upon the specific item being imported (1).
Forms when shipping your household belongings
Customs cannot process your shipment without the correct documentation. You must submit your tax registration number and full inventory. Your Work Permit or Residence Permit needs to be provided as well. Form C27 (Unaccompanied Baggage Declaration) is to be filled out once you arrive, and handed into customs. A valid Letter of Employment and your passport should also be included (2).

Duties when shipping your vehicle
It appears that foreigners importing a vehicle into Jamaica will incur duty for the privilege. The specific rate isn’t listed, though this will be charged on the value assigned for your vehicle by customs officials. You’re also not permitted to bring vehicles with engines larger than 2,800 cc’s into Jamaica. The vehicle must be manufactured within the last four years as well, in order to be eligible for importation. Finally, at least according to one source - a valid Import License is required to proceed (3).
Forms when shipping your vehicle
You’ll need to present your Import License, along with Import Entry Form C78. A tax compliance certificate and proof of insurance are also needed. An invoice that lists the CIF value, all accessories and the vehicle model is mandatory documentation as well. You must provide your driver’s license, your passport and the Original Bill of Lading too. Finally, you should show the vehicle’s title and registration from the origin country (4).
This overview isn’t comprehensive, and you should work closely with a reputable moving company like A1 Auto Transport. We’ll ensure that you don’t miss any vital details, which could cause major problems during clearance. It’s also a good idea to check with Jamaican customs before moving, to confirm what paperwork is required and what regulations are enforced.
Tips on how to make your international move easier
Pay a visit: Going to a new place for the first time can sometimes be intimidating. This is because you are not familiar with how everything operates. It is therefore advisable to pay a visit, weeks or months, before the moving day. Doing this will help you familiarize yourself with the place.
Plan ahead: It is important to make sure everything is in place well in advance. Most international moving companies advise their clients to start preparations 90 days before the moving day. This gives ample time to everything that needs to be taken care of. It also helps to avoid last minute delays, especially with customs.
Do research: Ensure you have done a thorough search on the web about the local languages, regions, cities, and the rules and regulations of your destination. This will make the transition easier. For instance, you need to find out about the rules governing home ownership in Jamaica. Certainly, such research will better inform you on whether to buy a home or rent an apartment.
Visa and passport: Moving abroad requires a visa and a passport. When looking for Jamaica International Moving Services, visit the Embassy of Jamaica in Washington DC, or apply through their website. Ensure you consult on the specific type of visa required. You may be required to get a temporary one before you apply for permanent residency.
Also, ensure that you have acquired a passport from the US Government.
