Duties when shipping your household belongings

You can receive import duty exemption, if your household belongings have been owned and personally used by you for at least the last six months. Customs only gives you three months to bring your goods in without paying duty - after which time you’ll need to renew your C27 Form.

If you aren’t fortunate enough to be granted duty exemption, then expect to pay between 5 - 40%. An additional Consumption Tax of 15% can also be imposed, though this seems to be based upon the specific item being imported (1).

Forms when shipping your household belongings

Customs cannot process your shipment without the correct documentation. You must submit your tax registration number and full inventory. Your Work Permit or Residence Permit needs to be provided as well. Form C27 (Unaccompanied Baggage Declaration) is to be filled out once you arrive, and handed into customs. A valid Letter of Employment and your passport should also be included (2).

Duties when shipping your vehicle

It appears that foreigners importing a vehicle into Jamaica will incur duty for the privilege. The specific rate isn’t listed, though this will be charged on the value assigned for your vehicle by customs officials. You’re also not permitted to bring vehicles with engines larger than 2,800 cc’s into Jamaica. The vehicle must be manufactured within the last four years as well, in order to be eligible for importation. Finally, at least according to one source - a valid Import License is required to proceed (3).

Forms when shipping your vehicle

You’ll need to present your Import License, along with Import Entry Form C78. A tax compliance certificate and proof of insurance are also needed. An invoice that lists the CIF value, all accessories and the vehicle model is mandatory documentation as well. You must provide your driver’s license, your passport and the Original Bill of Lading too. Finally, you should show the vehicle’s title and registration from the origin country (4).

I considered selling my car when I moved to Washington. It was old and rusty, but I grew attached to it. So, I called a couple companies to transport it to my new home, but they both fell through.

The first one couldn’t decide on a schedule. He would constantly change the pickup date till I got frustrated and canceled. The second was insufferable, very rude on the phone, even worse in person.

They started picking a part my car asking me why I still have it. If that’s their opinion of my vehicle, how can I trust they’ll take care of it? If something happened midway, why wouldn’t they just blame it on the car instead of paying up?

I can safely say this is a legit company that will get the job done.

There are a lot of options for auto transport these days, which surprisingly makes it harder to find a good company. I received more than 10 offers to ship my car, but I couldn’t decide on any of them.

We were abroad during the transport, so the transport was a bit tricky. The driver had to pick it up from storage on short notice and get it to its destination within at most 10 days.
