Is duty exemption available?

When importing your used household belongings into Guinea, it is possible to receive duty exemption. According to one trustworthy source, to be eligible you must turn in all required paperwork (to the destination agent) at least 2 weeks in advance of your shipment’s arrival (1).

Another source disagrees, stating that the time limit is 3 weeks in advance instead (2). You should also be aware, that duty exemption may only be granted to shipments with diplomatic status. Due to the conflicting information available, it’s highly recommended that you confirm directly with customs, which timeframe will apply.

Even on duty-exempt shipments, an RTL Tax of 2% or 300 Guinean Francs (whichever is greater) will be levied. For any new items in your shipment, the import duty can range from 38% – 45% (charged on the CIF value) (3).

Is specific paperwork required?

Before your shipment of household goods can enter Guinea, customs will need a packing list and your passport. An inventory that has the values for your goods listed is also required, and this is to be written in French. You also must provide a Resident Permit, Work Permit and/or a Letter of Employment.

If your shipment is a full container load (or FCL for short), then an international cargo tracking note is mandatory. You should also submit a Moving Certificate or paperwork proving a change of residency. The Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill for your shipment is necessary as well (4).

Is duty exemption available for your vehicle?

No mention of import duty exemption is made – so you should be prepared to pay as much as 45% to bring your vehicle into Guinea. The precise rate you’ll pay is based upon the vehicle’s engine size, year of manufacturer and other factors. Keep in mind, this duty is assessed on the combined amount of the vehicle’s value, the cost of freight and insurance (CIF) (5).

Is specific paperwork required for your vehicle?

You must provide a valid Import Permit, which has been issued by the Ministry of External Affairs. This document must be obtained, before you’ll be allowed to import your vehicle into the country. Proof of insurance coverage and a Change of Residence Certificate are also required. Customs will also request the vehicle’s registration and title, which were issued by the origin country (6). You’ll need to show the purchase receipt or invoice as well – though this may only be necessary for new vehicles (7).

Though this discussion should give you an excellent idea of what to expect – other rules and paperwork requirements are enforced. You must talk with customs before moving, to confirm that you haven’t overlooked any vital steps along the way.

How to find the best international moving company

When conducting a search for the best international moving company, you need to look into a couple of factors. The company may have marketed themselves well but what are their clients saying? Check the customer reviews and ratings to get an idea of their service delivery. Confirm if the movers offer additional services such as packing and unpacking. You should also hire the services of a genuine and trusted moving company. Therefore, check if they are licensed to provide Guinea International Moving Services. While you may have trusted the mover to deliver your belongings, it is good to acknowledge the fact that there are perils that may occur.
