Are import duties charged by Gambia?

Though duty usually applies when importing goods into the country, you can be exempted from these fees. You must have owned and personally used your household items for at least six months. Having lived outside of Gambia for a minimum of the last 12 months is also required. Your shipment must arrive no later than six months after you enter the country. Customs also mandates that you not transfer ownership, lend out or get rid of these goods inside of Gambia.

Even if you do successfully obtain duty exemption by following all the conditions listed above - some fees do apply. An Ecowas tax of 0.55% and a processing fee of 1.5% are charged by customs (1).

Are certain documents required by Gambia?

You will need to have your passport and Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill. A Non-Sale Certificate verifying that you won’t sell your household belongings within Gambia is also required. A comprehensive inventory with receipts attached for any new electrical goods or appliances is mandatory as well. Customs will ask to see your Work Permit, Residence Permit and/or Letter of Employment too. A packing list and your passport round out the list (2).

Are import duties charged on your vehicle?

No mention of duty exemption is made by the reputable sources consulted - so expect to pay the standard rate on your vehicle. According to the International Association of Movers, a 35% revenue tax and 18% duty on vehicle imports will be charged. An additional 10% sales tax, 1.5% processing fee and a 0.05% ECOWAS tax also apply (3).

Are certain documents required for your vehicle?

When shipping your vehicle to Gambia, many of the same documents necessary for your household goods are required. These include a Non-Sale Certificate and Original Bill of Lading or Air Waybill. Your Work Permit, Residence Permit and/or Letter of Employment are also necessary once again. The vehicle’s registration and purchase invoice must be provided as well (4).

Customs procedures have a tendency to change, and the above list of paperwork and regulations isn’t comprehensive. To avoid problems or added fees when shipping your goods to Gambia, you should always speak to customs beforehand.

Tips on how to make your international move easier

Here are a number of tips to make the move easier:

  • Start looking for immigration documents early. Some of them might take days before they get approval and this could result in delays.
  • Only carry the things you can’t find in Gambia. Don’t waste space shipping things that are available in Gambia.
  • Find out if you will be able to use your appliances in Gambia. Different countries use different electrical signals so check if your home country uses the same one as Gambia.
  • Check if you meet all visa requirements for entering Gambia and start preparing the documents early.
  • Choose a moving company that meets your needs within your budget and ask about their process.

Why you need a professional moving company when relocating overseas

Gambia International Moving Services can really help make moving easy for you. Let’s take a look at why you should go for a moving company as opposed to doing everything yourself.

  • Moving accidents can be expensive. What better way to avoid them than by having someone else handle the process? Any accidents will be their responsibility.
  • When you work with a professional moving company, you get to save time that can be spent doing other tasks.
  • Professional moving companies have the tools and equipment necessary to pack, load and transport even the bulkiest of home appliances.

A-1 Auto Transport can help you move your household goods internationally. Call 888-509-3213 to get a free, no obligation to buy price quote on interstate moving services.

How to find the best international moving company

The internet is full of moving companies that will claim to offer the best Gambia International Moving Services. However, you should not take these claims at face value. Here’s how to pick a moving company that won’t disappoint:

  1. If you have friends who have made an international move in the past, ask them for recommendations. If you don’t have such friends, read online reviews written by past customers who have experienced the company’s services.
  2. Ask if the company has a US DOT number and search for it here to make sure that you are getting services from a licensed company.
  3. Ask about their cargo insurance policy and how they handle claims.
  4. Finally, ask how long they have been in business. Generally, an experienced company is more reliable than companies that are new in the industry.

Satisfied Customers

“I bought a Dodge COE recently in Texas, so I was looking for a company to transport it to Mississippi. After putting a few ads, tens of companies called and spammed us with emails, but none of them were what we were looking for. Each one seemed a bit off. The quote was either too big or suspiciously low; some were just unfriendly and unlikable, while others reeked of a scam. Finally, I told my sister about my situation and she recommended Joe’s company. A1 Auto Transport met all our criteria. Joe has impeccable communication skills. He was friendly, explained the transport details, and gave us a bunch of options for our vehicle. These differed depending on the type of truck we wanted to use. We went with an open carrier in the end due to the lower price. Finally, the truck arrived. It had an open trailer carrying 3 other vehicles. The driver explained they were all heading to Mississippi, so they wouldn’t delay our transport. I got my car back 3 days later, a bit earlier than they estimated. But hey, if you’re going to complain about faster service, then it’s not the company for you. For all those who prefer professionalism, and awesome services, I highly recommend it!”

“To whom it may concern: I currently work out of the Auto Driveaway Co - Atlanta, Georgia location. At this moment I would like to take this time to say "THANK YOU" to one of your representatives Ms. Cherie Morse. Repeatedly she has presented herself ( and a reflection on A1 Auto Transport ) to be quite capable to me - promptly answering my questions ( mostly quotes @ competitive rates ) and assisting me in tracking down those trucking movements - done in the past. Unlike other companies wherein I get a "machine" and MIGHT get an answer back that day - Even with her voice mail, her response is immediate and for the want of nothing else, I wanted someone to know at A1 Auto Transport that I "at least" sincerely appreciate all her efforts. Thank you again. Sincerely, Phillip Raila Auto Driveaway Company, Atlanta”

“Thank you Joe and the A1 Auto Transport team! It was a satisfying, honest and professional experience. The car was picked up on time and delivered to South Carolina as promised. They didn’t charge extra either. Joe made sure I was informed throughout the transport and explained the entire process, so I knew what to expect. The driver brought the car to my home, encouraged me to inspect it, and asked for payment only after. He called a day before to let me know he’d arrive, and also a couple hours earlier, so I’d be prepared. I had no problem with the drop off location, since it was in front of my home. I didn’t have to pay a deposit until the truck actually picked up my car. I was also informed of it beforehand. I’ve heard stories of companies asking for a deposit before picking your car, so they may leave with your money without ever showing up. Not the case with A1. I received another call from Joe after receiving my car to ask if I was satisfied with the service. Yes, yes and yes!! Thank you Joe for an awesome delivery!”

“I recently contacted your company regarding the transport of a car I had purchased in South Dakota and needed brought to Okalahoma. First of all your quoted price was half that of your nearest competition, secondly the actual transport took only a few days and finally your driver couldn't have been more professional. Thanks for the value and quality of service. If you ever need a reference I'm your guy. Regards, Walt Thompson”

“We were going back to Ohio after a job opportunity didn’t work out. The whole family was tired, and we just wanted to get back home and start over. I used A1 Auto Transport to transport my car when I first moved, and they did a good job, so I called them again. I explained to Joe my situation, and he was very understanding. I was not in the mood for any drawn out discussions. He picked up on that and went straight to the point. He suggested we use the same arrangements we had when I first used their services, and I agreed immediately. The car was moved using the same open trailer and driver as before. This was reassuring, as I knew the man was good at his job, and everything went well the last time. Nothing unfortunate happened this time either, and the car was delivered in 4 days. It was in good condition. They informed me each day of its location, but I didn’t bother replying because moving my family and all my belongings took all my time. I’m better now and would like to thank Joe and his team sincerely for all they’ve done! I’ll gladly recommend you to my friends.”
