Being a citizen of the European Union has some fantastic benefits. You are able to move freely among the 27 member states, without the need for passports or visas.
Finland and Estonia are both members of the European Union which means that you get the easiest possible move. Essentially, all you must do is get yourself and your belongings there.
It’s true that Estonians speak a different language, but geographically, Estonia and Finland have a lot of similarities. Both countries experience severe winters and mild summers. The overall culture in Finland and Estonia are different, however. Estonia is a young country and still going through growing pains. That said, as a young country, Estonia invests time and money in new technologies and innovations.
Import Rules for EU Citizens
As an EU citizen, you have fewer hoops to jump through as you plan your move from Finland to Estonia. Transportation will need to be arranged, and you can choose from sea, air, or land transport options. To move permanently, you will need to obtain a residence permit.
As far as your household imports go, EU citizens do not have to go through the onerous customs declaration process. Review the list of restricted or forbidden imports before you begin to avoid disappointment later.
What About Pets?
You may bring your pets with you or send them via another means. Some pets are subject to special rules, so be sure to do your research first. Estonia does have some restrictions on certain breeds of dogs or poultry.
Cats and dogs are subject to special regulations imposed by the European Parliament. If you are moving to Tallinn or Tartu, you will need to register your pets in those cities upon your arrival.
Your pet will need the following for entry:
- Current Certificate of Vaccination – Rabies, in particular, but other vaccinations according to breed and age of pet.
- International Veterinary Certificate – Proof of examination and clearance by a licensed veterinarian.
- EU Pet Passport – This document provides vital information on vaccinations, ownership, and your pet’s date of birth.
- Microchip, Transponder, or Tattoo – All must include identification details for your pet and must be completed after rabies vaccination occurs.
Import Rules for EU Vehicles
You may import your personal vehicle to Estonia tax and duty free from Finland. You will be able to drive your vehicle in Estonia for a few months without having to register your vehicle in the country, but if you plan to stay longer, you should go through the process of registering, licensing, and insuring your vehicle in Estonia. In order to do so, you will need to be able to provide proof of purchase, ownership without liens or encumbrances, residence in Estonia, and vehicle insurance.
