Import duties on household items
According to one highly respected source, duty exemption is not usually offered (even on used belongings). The only exception is if youāre employed by a company that has a protocol agreement with Equatorial Guinea - and this must include duty exemption in the terms (1). Another source disagrees completely, asserting that if youāve owned your household belongings for longer than six months - you wonāt pay any duty to import them (2).
In order to clear up any confusion, you should talk to customs about whether duty exemption will be possible on your shipment. If you discover that duties will be charged, expect to pay 10% on your used household items. Appliances will incur a 38% duty and the rate is 30% for food items (3).
Import paperwork for household items
Youāll need to give customs your passport and visa, as well as a comprehensive inventory. This inventory can be written in either Spanish or French and it must bear your signature and the date. You should also attach receipts for all electrical goods under six months old - and these should show where and when you bought the item. Customs also requires a Move Certificate, which you can obtain from the local city hall in your origin city (4).
Import duties on your vehicle
The International Association of Movers says that your vehicle can be exempted from import duty. To be eligible, you must classify it as part of your personal effects, and have owned the vehicle for a minimum of six months (in your own name). Youāll also need to have prior authorization issued by the Port Authority and the Ministry of Transportation, before shipping your vehicle to Equatorial Guinea. However, be aware that this duty exemption may only be extended to those with diplomatic status. Therefore, itās best that you check with customs to be sure (5).
If you arenāt able to obtain duty exemption, the rate charged could range from 51.9% to 62% of the vehicleās CIF value (6).
Import paperwork for your vehicle
Customs requires certain documentation, when processing your vehicle for entry into Equatorial Guinea. You must show your Original Bill of Lading (for shipments over the water) or Air Waybill (for shipments via air). Youāll also need a valid Letter of Employment, and proof of insurance coverage. Finally, the purchase receipt or invoice should be submitted to customs (7).
You will need to file additional paperwork and adhere to other regulations, for shipments of your household items and vehicle. Speak with customs to learn all the requirements which will apply in your situation.
