Changes in an industry, the operations of a business or an individual’s life may bring about the need to relocate. This will involve international moving and is best tackled by professional moving companies. When you want to relocate to El Salvador, look for a company that provides reliable international moving services and generally assists their clients to move with ease. It would be ideal if such a firm would also safely ship your car as part of their relocation package.
How Much Does It Cost to Move to El Salvador?
The cost of moving internationally to El Salvador can range anywhere from $2,000-$12,000 depending on a variety of factors such as the size of move, total distance, route, transportation method, and current market trends.
Whether you're moving to El Salvador for work, study, or family, it is the start of something new for you. It is always advisable to employ a licensed international moving company to help you through the process.
You would face many unexpected expenses, the biggest being that you would have to hire an international moving company to move your belongings to El Salvador. The bigger your move is, the more you would spend on it. Other factors that would influence your international moving costs include the following:
Visas Fees
While moving to another country, you will have to apply for a visa. Your visa cost depends on the country, the type of visa, and the length of your stay. You would have to pay more for getting visas to some countries than others. Also, you would be spending more on visa processing if you have dependents moving with you, such as your spouse, children, or other family members.
Customs and Taxes
For anything you would move to El Salvador, you're expected to pay customs and taxes. The exact fee you'll be spending on this depends on the country you're moving to, and you should allow your moving company to guide you on this since they are experienced.
Storage
You must plan for storage services while moving to a new country such as El Salvador. This is essential because if you're planning to stay there for a while, you would need to keep your belongings in a store till you get back. If you also need to settle down in your new home before arranging your stuff, you could keep your belongings in climate-controlled storage like the one we offer in El Salvador.

Duties when relocating to El Salvador
If you’ll be importing household belongings which you’ve owned and personally used for at least the last six months - you’ll be granted duty exemption. To be eligible, your shipment of goods must enter port no later than 90 days after moving to El Salvador. You also aren’t permitted to transfer ownership of these items, give them away or get rid of them while in the country. If you don’t take all of your belongings with you when leaving, then duties will be imposed on those you leave behind (1).

Documents when relocating to El Salvador
Be prepared to hand customs your passport and visa, as well as either your Residence Permit or Work Permit. A valid Letter of Employment and a NIT (Numero de identificacion) issued by the Ministry of Finance is also necessary documentation. Customs also requires a Certificate of Migratory Movement, and you can obtain this from the Immigration General Office. You also may need a Bank Guarantee, though this doesn’t seem to be necessary in all cases. A comprehensive inventory and a Certificate of Change of Residence should also be provided (2).
Duties on your vehicle when relocating to El Salvador
Here trustworthy sources differ, with one stating that both duties and taxes will be levied on your vehicle during importation (3). Another source says that duty exemption is possible, but import taxes will still be charged (4). With such variation in the available information, it’s recommended that you contact customs to learn what fees will be levied on your vehicle.
If your vehicle will be subject to import duties - the rate varies and depends upon the engine volume, year of manufacturer, model, monetary value and more (5). Customs also mandates that vehicles be eight years old or less. El Salvador also has emission standards which your vehicle must meet, and different documentation is required depending upon whether it is new or used (6).
Documents for your vehicle when relocating to El Salvador
Customs will ask for your driver’s license, Original Bill of Lading and the purchase invoice (which should include the price paid). Other paperwork required includes the vehicle’s title and your driver’s license (7). A valid Residence Permit and a Certificate of Compliance (for new vehicles) or Certificate of Emissions (for used vehicles) must be submitted (8).
Though this overview offers an excellent idea of the forms and regulations involved when moving - it is not exhaustive. Therefore, you should always discuss your upcoming relocation with customs directly, to learn all the requirements you’ll need to follow.
