Duties when relocating to El Salvador

If you’ll be importing household belongings which you’ve owned and personally used for at least the last six months - you’ll be granted duty exemption. To be eligible, your shipment of goods must enter port no later than 90 days after moving to El Salvador. You also aren’t permitted to transfer ownership of these items, give them away or get rid of them while in the country. If you don’t take all of your belongings with you when leaving, then duties will be imposed on those you leave behind (1).

Documents when relocating to El Salvador

Be prepared to hand customs your passport and visa, as well as either your Residence Permit or Work Permit. A valid Letter of Employment and a NIT (Numero de identificacion) issued by the Ministry of Finance is also necessary documentation. Customs also requires a Certificate of Migratory Movement, and you can obtain this from the Immigration General Office. You also may need a Bank Guarantee, though this doesn’t seem to be necessary in all cases. A comprehensive inventory and a Certificate of Change of Residence should also be provided (2).

Duties on your vehicle when relocating to El Salvador

Here trustworthy sources differ, with one stating that both duties and taxes will be levied on your vehicle during importation (3). Another source says that duty exemption is possible, but import taxes will still be charged (4). With such variation in the available information, it’s recommended that you contact customs to learn what fees will be levied on your vehicle.

If your vehicle will be subject to import duties - the rate varies and depends upon the engine volume, year of manufacturer, model, monetary value and more (5). Customs also mandates that vehicles be eight years old or less. El Salvador also has emission standards which your vehicle must meet, and different documentation is required depending upon whether it is new or used (6).

Customs will ask for your driver’s license, Original Bill of Lading and the purchase invoice (which should include the price paid). Other paperwork required includes the vehicle’s title and your driver’s license (7). A valid Residence Permit and a Certificate of Compliance (for new vehicles) or Certificate of Emissions (for used vehicles) must be submitted (8).

I considered selling my car when I moved to Washington. It was old and rusty, but I grew attached to it. So, I called a couple companies to transport it to my new home, but they both fell through.

The first one couldn’t decide on a schedule. He would constantly change the pickup date till I got frustrated and canceled. The second was insufferable, very rude on the phone, even worse in person.

They started picking a part my car asking me why I still have it. If that’s their opinion of my vehicle, how can I trust they’ll take care of it? If something happened midway, why wouldn’t they just blame it on the car instead of paying up?
