Denmark and the U.S. have a lot in common but are still very different. Both countries have a reputation for a high standard of living, access to technological infrastructure, and a thriving economy. Even so, moving from the U.S. to Denmark will be a big change.
This guide will give you a brief overview of the ins and outs of moving to Denmark from the U.S.
How Can I Ship my Household Goods to Denmark?
There are multiple ways to ship your household goods to Denmark. You can choose air, sea, rail, or road, depending on your budget and timeline. Air freight is quickest and most expensive. Sea freight is the cheapest and can also take the longest.
Be advised that you should pay close attention to customs regulations and allowances in the country. Make sure to establish your legal residence in Denmark before importing your items if you hope to avoid paying duty and taxes on your belongings.
Customs Regulations in Denmark
Before you ship your belongings, you need to know:
- In order to pass through customs, you must already be in the country when your items arrive.
- You will need to be officially registered as a resident of Denmark in order to import your goods duty and tax-free.
- You must complete all of your imports within one year of your move to Denmark. The items that you import must be at least six months old.
Be prepared to present the following documentation:
- Valid ID and Passport
- A complete, itemized inventory of all your imported goods, either in Dutch or English
- Proof of residence in Denmark if you are hoping to import your goods without tax or duty
- Permits for restricted items, if necessary
Danish Customs Allowances
Since you are moving to Denmark from outside the EU, your imports will be taxed and subject to excise duties if they exceed the following benchmarks for value:
- $480 USD if shipped by air or sea
- $330 USD if shipped by other means
This means that you will almost certainly have to pay customs and duty, unless your shipment is very small.
What About my Pets?
Pets brought into Denmark from outside of the EU will need to be checked at an official Traveler’s Point of Entry. Here, you will present documentation regarding your pet, to include proof of ownership. Denmark has a list of 13 breeds of dogs that are excluded from importation, including some you may not have thought of. Make sure you check the rules before attempting to bring your pet with you into Denmark.
Shipping my Vehicle
There are four major steps to importing a vehicle to Denmark:
- Complete form 21.059E, which is an application to drive a foreign-registered vehicle in Denmark
- Submit your vehicle for a technical and customs inspection. Any vehicles imported from the U.S. to Denmark will need substantial modifications to be ready to drive in Denmark. These modifications must be made by a qualified mechanic.
- Register your vehicle in Denmark at the Centralregisteret for Motorkøretøjer or SKAT.
- Pay applicable taxes and fees
You will be charged VAT of anywhere between 5-12%, based on the value of your vehicle. If you have sufficient time, you can contact SKAT for a pre-emptive determination of the taxes you will need to pay. This process can take as many as 7 weeks.
