Copenhagen is the capital city of Denmark, located on the islands of Zealand and Amager. The city is clean and modern, and the citizens value health and wellness. In fact, over 50% of the citizens of Copenhagen ride bikes to and from work – even in the winter. As a result, the city has far less pollution from motor vehicles.
Perhaps it is not surprising, then, that Copenhagen Harbour is one of the few urban centers with a harbor that is actually clean enough to swim. This is the case for other cities in Denmark as well, a result of the Danish people’s care for the environment.
If you’re moving to Copenhagen, you probably already know how awesome it is. This guide is intended to provide an overview of what you need to know to move from the U.S. to Copenhagen, Denmark.
Moving and Shipping Household Goods
You will have options for how you transport your goods to Denmark, including air, sea, rail, or road. Air freight is always the quickest and most expensive. Sea freight by container or half-container is the cheapest but will likely take longer.
Pay close attention to customs regulations and allowances in the country and contact your local Danish embassy for the most current guidance. Make sure to establish legal residence in Denmark before importing your items if you hope to avoid paying duty and taxes on your belongings.
Customs Regulations in Denmark
Before you ship your belongings, you need to review the fine print. Here are some of the things you must know before you move.
- In order to pass through customs, you must already be in the country when your items arrive.
- You will need to be officially registered as a resident of Denmark in order to import your goods duty and tax-free.
- You must complete all of your imports within one year of your move to Denmark. The items that you import must be at least six months old.
You will need to have the following documents ready:
- Valid ID and Passport
- A complete, itemized inventory of all your imported goods, either in Dutch or English
- Proof of residence in Denmark if you are hoping to import your goods without tax or duty
- Permits for restricted items, if necessary
Danish Customs Allowances
Danish customs charges taxes and fees based on the value of your declared goods. You can travel with up to $11,000 USD (subject to exchange rate) tax-free. Cash above this limit will be subject to taxation, and possibly, additional questions from customs officials. Carrying cash may not be your best option anyway. Better to deposit it in the bank and retrieve it once you have safely arrived in Copenhagen.
Since you are importing your goods from America, your items will be subject to excise taxes if they exceed the following declared values:
- $480 if shipped by air or sea
- $330 if shipped by other methods
Since most households are valued at over that amount, you will likely have to pay taxes on the majority of your household goods.
What About my Pets?
Pets brought into Denmark from America will need to be checked at an official Traveler’s Point of Entry. Here, you will present documentation regarding your pet, to include proof of ownership. Denmark has a list of 13 breeds of dogs that are excluded from importation, including some dogs that are perfectly legal in the U.S.. Make sure you check the rules before attempting to bring your pet with you into Denmark.
