Chad International Moving Services
Although moving to a new home can be challenging, an overseas move is a similar but totally different experience. In addition to the normal moving challenges like moving pets to a new environment, leaving old friends and having to make new ones, an international move will require you to deal with immigration, customs, new electrical signals for home appliances and sometimes even a new language.
How Much Does It Cost to Move to Chad?
The cost of moving internationally to Chad can range anywhere from $2,000-$12,000 depending on a variety of factors such as the size of move, total distance, route, transportation method, and current market trends.
Chad is a landlocked country at the point where northern and central Africa meet. The cost of moving your things to Chad can vary greatly. The cost of moving household goods to African countries from the United States can range from $4,000 to $13,000.
The factors that cause the variety in moving costs are numerous and include custom duties, taxes, and added services like packing and unpacking.
Customs Duties/Taxes
Different countries have different customs costs. Generally, household goods are duty-free in the United States, but other countries might charge for them. The custom duties are usually included in the overall moving cost.
Some countries, like those in the EU, charge customs duties depending on where the shipment is coming from. EU countries don’t pay customs duties when moving to other EU countries.
The value of the items you are moving generally affects the amount of money you will pay as customs fees. There might also be fixed taxes for specific items and inspection fees for others.
Packing/Unpacking Services
Packing and unpacking services are services that will add to the overall moving cost.
Packing involves arranging the household goods into boxes before they are loaded into a shipping container. While you might pack your things yourself at the beginning of the move, your items might be inspected by customs officers, meaning that the mover has to unpack and repack the items.
This service can start at $100 but go as high as $600 depending on the size of your cargo and the type of items that you are moving.

Duties when shipping your household items to Chad
If you’ve owned and used your household belongings for at least the last six months - and lived outside of Chad for the last 12 months - then you can import your shipment free of any duty. If you do obtain duty exemption, then you’re required to keep the items in your possession during your stay (you aren’t even permitted to let others borrow them).
You also must turn in all paperwork pertaining to your shipment, a full 2 weeks before your goods arrive. Last but not least, a Certificate of Free Entry must be obtained from the head customs office in Chad (1).
Documents when shipping your household items to Chad
Various forms and paperwork is required, when importing goods into the country. You’ll need a Move Certificate (Certificat de Demenagement), and this can be obtained from either the local police station or city hall in the municipality where you’ll be living. Your Resident Permit, Work Permit or a Letter of Employment are also required.
Customs will also need to see your Non-Sale Certificate, verifying that you won’t sell your belongings inside Chad’s borders. A full packing list and a separate inventory should also be provided. Be sure to sign and date this inventory, include monetary values on it and write it out in French (2).
Duties when shipping your vehicle to Chad
If you’ll be importing your used vehicle into the country, you won’t be required to pay any duty. Import duties are only levied on new vehicles - which makes the import process significantly more affordable for most people. One reputable source does mention import tax, however. Whether this is a separate charge isn’t clear - so confirm what fees will apply to your shipment by speaking with customs (3).
Regulations when shipping your vehicle to Chad
Though used vehicles have the typical import duty waived, only vehicles less than 3 years old can be brought into Chad. Also, your Original Bill of Lading is required to list the chassis and engine numbers, make, model, year and engine volume for your vehicle (4).

Documents when shipping your vehicle to Chad
Before customs will authorize your vehicle for entry, you must submit some paperwork. This includes your driver’s license, and the vehicle’s title and registration. The Bill of Sale or purchase invoice are also needed. Your Social Security card and a Certificate of Non-Sale (verifying you won’t sell the vehicle within Chad) are mandatory as well. If the vehicle you’ll be importing is new, then an Import License must also be provided. Finally, if a third-party will be handling the clearance process for you - then a valid Power of Attorney is required (5).
Additional paperwork and regulations may be pertinent - so confirm all the necessary requirements for both your household goods and vehicle with customs.
Tips on how to make your international move easier
We know that moving overseas is never easy so we have compiled a list of tips that will help make your life easier as you plan that move. Here they are:
- Don’t fill your luggage with items that you don’t need. Only carry the items that you can’t do without and those that can’t be bought in Chad.
- Start working on the immigration documents early. Some documents will take days or weeks before you are cleared and this could easily end up causing delays if you don’t leave sufficient time for them.
- Research on visa requirements and customs restrictions to avoid unpleasant surprises at border control.
- Pick a moving company that offers all the Chad International Moving Services that you require within your budget.

Why you need a professional moving company when relocating overseas
There are two ways you can go about relocating to a new county. There is the DIY route which while cheaper will require much more from you. Then there is the professional way which may cost more but offers greater peace of mind. Here’s why:
- Experience: Professional moving companies have done hundreds of moves in the past so they are armed with the necessary experience to handle the entire process.
- Connections: In the years they have been in business, moving companies have built good relationships with local authorities in both countries hence they are best placed to fix any problems that might arise.
- Storage Facilities: Should your shipment arrive in Chad before you, moving companies will store it in secure warehouses as they await your arrival.
- Equipment: From loading appliances to trucks to packing supplies for fragile items, shipping companies have invested in the right equipment for the job.
How to find the best international moving company
With all that said, it’s important to note that you will only be able to get these benefits when you choose the right company. Here’s how to go about that:
- Talk to friends who have had to move to a new country in the past or read company reviews on websites like Yelp.
- Ask about their certifications. A good company should be licensed and insured.
- Get a quote to know exactly what you will be getting and roughly how much it will cost.
