Importing a Vehicle to the US
When importing a vehicle into the US, there are two major considerations: emission standards and vehicle safety.
Emission standards are set by the Environmental Protection Agency. If a car is imported into the US, it must be certified by the EPA to comply with their emission standards. Since most vehicles produced outside of the US are not automatically certified, imported vehicles must be inspected for compliance and repaired or modified as deemed necessary.
Your vehicle will also be subject to a safety inspection that looks at basic components of the vehicle, checking that seat belts, wipers, head lights and other necessary safety measures are installed and functional. This inspection will determine if the vehicle is ready to be driven in the US, or if additional repairs or upgrades are needed.
Any vehicle imported into the U.S. must have a clean title with no liens. You will need to pay a duty, which is generally around 2.5% of the value of the vehicle, though there are some exceptions. More on that later.
Remember, if this all feels overwhelming, and you would like a professional to guide you through the process, A-1 Auto Transport is here for you.
Importing Household Goods to the US
For the delivery of your vehicle or household goods, there are several transport methods you can choose from. Goods can be transported by ground, sea, or air, but most household imports moving overseas are transported by ship. Although enclosed shipping methods are recommended to those moving overseas, open air methods are still available. Depending on your needs, this may be a more economical option. Both methods are considered safe and are protected by insurance coverage.
You will need to declare and pay customs duty on goods you move into the US from other countries. Some countries are exempt from this requirement due to international trade agreements, so make sure to research current regulations. Goods valued below $800 are not subject to customs duty.
