Moving out of Germany for the next stage in your life is a big step, and planning it months before will help you do it seamlessly and not leave any loose end in Deutschland. The checklist for someone moving out of Germany is quite long, but skipping the necessary steps would only make it more complicated, so here is what you should do.
How Far Away Will You Move?
The details of your move depend a lot on your destination. Obviously, moving to France from Germany is much cheaper and faster than moving to Australia. But it’s not as simple as checking the distance between the two locations.
Your move will be influenced by certain immigration rules for the country you are moving to, your personal situation, how accessible the destination point is (if it’s close to airports or ports,) and so on.
Check What You Need to Establish in the New Place
Getting a residency permit in a new country can be a long process, and not all countries let you live inside their borders while you are waiting for your application to be processed. Make sure you know exactly what you need to become a resident in the new country and get what is needed to stay legally at the new address.
If you are moving to your home country, the situation becomes much easier, but you still have to end your contracts in Germany before going.
End All Your Contracts in Germany
Make sure you don’t leave any active contracts in Germany, except the ones you can still use and finance. Get in touch with your banks, the insurance company, employer, telecommunication provider, and so on.
Book a Moving Company to Transport Your Belongings
Start planning the transportation of your belongings a few months before you actually leave the country, if possible. Start by sorting out the stuff that you will take with you, and begin collecting quotes from international moving companies at least 3 months before the move.
Let them know:
- Where you are moving to and from;
- What’s your moving date;
- How much stuff you need to ship;
- Whether you need extra services, like packaging;
- If you want door-to-door service.
