Australian Moving to Ireland [2020 Guide]

Are you an Australian looking to make a move to Ireland?

If the answer is yes, we understand why you're looking at transitioning. Ireland has a unique and storied history that's complemented by amazing views, top-tier golf experiences, etc.

Most people looking to move to Ireland from Australia need to plan to ship both their household goods and their vehicle. We're here to outline all of the essential components of shipping your household goods and your car to achieve a successful move.

How Do I Ship My Household Items to Ireland?

While shipping household items from Australia to Ireland requires some planning, it's more straightforward than vehicle importation. The best option to ship household goods to Ireland from Australia is ocean freight shipping or air freight shipping. Airfreight shipping is the quickest and most secure way to ship household items. Therefore, it's the most expensive method of transporting your possessions. Ocean freight shipping is less costly and, thus, more popular for shipping household items.

We recommend air freight shipping if you have fewer amounts of items to ship and need your possessions to arrive at an accelerated rate. If you have a smaller number of items to ship, you can still utilize the lower costs of sea freight shipping through selecting a partial container instead of a full-sized container. Partial containers involve sharing a portion of the overseas moving container with another person's items.

An important factor that will influence your shipping costs includes the nature of your items. If you’re shipping lots of fragile items, you can expect your shipping costs to rise.

If you own pets, chances are you'll ship them too, so be sure to look up Ireland's requirements to verify your pet will gain approval for importation. Pet transportation agents are wonderful resources that can contact all of the relevant agencies within Ireland.

Door-to-Door or Door-to-Port?

It's best that you order a door-to-door service for maximum convenience when shipping household goods. Door-to-door delivery will consist of a household item transportation service loading your items outside of your home, then dropping off those items outside the door of your new home in Ireland for a more seamless moving experience. If you don't order a door-to-door service, you'll likely have to opt for a door-to-port service that'll involve you picking up your household items from the port nearest to your destination.

Once you organize your plans to ship household goods to Ireland from Australia, you're going to need to take care of your vehicle. If you're moving to a city like Dublin that has plenty of public transportation, you may not need a car, but more likely than not, you will need to transport your automobile to Ireland from Australia.

Here's how to get the job done:

What's Owning a Car in Ireland Like?

Long story short, owning a car in Ireland isn't cheap. The high expenses that car owners in Ireland experience is linked to high gas prices and several taxes. Value Added, Vehicle Registration, and Motor Tax are the three most prominent taxes that Irish citizens are subjected to. National Car Tests and motor vehicle insurance are a couple of extra costs; it helps to be aware of.

Here's some good news:

You won't be subject to every one of these expenses as a car owner in Ireland.

What is Value Added Tax?

After purchasing a vehicle in Ireland, you're liable to pay Value Added Tax. If you're considering selling your car in Australia and buying a car in Ireland, you can skip the Value Added Tax by importing your vehicle instead. Certain exemptions exist for Value Added Tax in Ireland. If you buy a used car operated for at least six months and have driven over 3,700 miles and can prove these facts, the Irish government will exempt you from Value Added Tax.

What is Vehicle Registration Tax in Ireland?

Unfortunately, you can't avoid Vehicle Registration Tax when importing a vehicle into Ireland. After importing a car into Ireland, you must have the car registered and evaluated for Vehicle Registration Tax. You can't put off registering your vehicle either as all vehicles being imported into Ireland must be registered seven days or less after arrival.

What is Motor Tax in Ireland?

All vehicles in Ireland are subject to motor tax. RF100's are forms that help you apply to pay the motor tax after registering your vehicle. Motor taxes are essentially fees you have to pay due to the emissions your car produces or the size of the vehicle's engine. Once you pay your motor tax, you'll have to display a disc to show in your car for proper verification. You're required to renew your motor tax verification once a year.

We're done with the taxes you'll have to pay for your car in Ireland, but we still need to touch on the extra costs associated with vehicle ownership in The Emerald Isle.

What is the National Car Test?

National car tests are performed on four years or older vehicles and are essential to complete, so you don't face fines and other penalties. Cars younger than ten years old require a National Car Test every two years, while cars older than ten years need the test every year.

We're almost to the finish line as we're about to cover the driver's insurance topic in Ireland.

Do I Need Driver's Insurance in Ireland?

Yes! You will need to have vehicle insurance when operating a car in Ireland. If you drive without proper vehicle insurance, you can put yourself at risk for fines and penalties similar to skipping a National Car Test. Insurance premiums are calculated in Ireland the same way they're calculated in Australia with age, gender, car type, and license category serving as crucial information points.

The three types of motor vehicle insurance in Ireland, from most to least expensive, are:

  • Comprehensive Insurance
  • Third-Party, Fire and Theft Insurance
  • Third-Party insurance.

Comprehensive insurance protects you on all levels. Third-Party, Fire, and Theft Insurance protects you against your car's loss to fire, theft, and general damage and optional add-ons. Third-party insurance doesn't cover damages against your vehicle and doesn't provide you with compensation if you're at fault.

When all the information is present for you to evaluate how to ship your car to Ireland successfully, you can make proper plans in advance for a more seamless experience. Do your best to include running costs in your budget for shipping your car to Ireland as basic maintenance such as tires is pricey in Ireland.

We recommend getting quotes from multiple companies to determine the best method to ship your household items and vehicle(s). Most importantly, always book ahead to ship your possessions, so you're under less pressure before the move.
