Gifting Off Unwanted Items
There is nothing that will reward you during your moving process more than reducing the weight of the shipment. This is why it is a good idea to de-clutter before inviting the moving company for an in-home inspection. One of the ways you can de-clutter is by gifting some of the items that you no longer need.
Preparing for de-cluttering
The following are steps that will help you in the de-cluttering process before you start donating the items that you don’t need.
The first step when de-cluttering should be sorting. If your attic is full of things that you don’t use, then you will need to go through each one of them. By so doing, you figure out the items you want to go with and can have these packed and ready for the mover to ship.
Most people will want to sell some of the valuable items that they don’t need before giving away the rest. A good approach is organizing a yard sale, selling whatever can be sold, and then giving away everything that doesn’t sell. You can also have a section with giveaways where anybody who attends the sale can take whatever they find useful. You can also try eBay and Craigslist for some of the larger items if you have time.

Once you have decided the items you need to donate, the next step is finding charities that are willing to accept the items. You will want to group similar items together. For example, all clothes can be kept together so that you can have an easy time telling them exactly how much you want to give away. When talking to them, try and get them to come and collect the items rather than having to ship them or drop them off yourself. This will save you time and money on shipping costs.
If you can’t find a charity that needs a specific item that you have, you can list it on Freecycle and see if you can find someone who needs it. Anybody who is interested in them will get in touch with you and arrange how they can come and collect it.
Other places to donate
There are a number of institutions that will benefit from your unwanted items. For example, homeless shelters will find your unwanted bedding very helpful. You can also donate your old books, comic books and magazines to a local school or library. If you have old working toys, boxes of crayons or half used packs of copy paper, your local day care center will find some good use for them. Your children’s old clothes and shoes will be gladly received by your local children’s home.
De-cluttering is one of the things that will reward you the most when planning a move. Although you can get away with not doing it in short local moves, it is absolutely necessary for long distance moves. You don’t want to ship goods across continents when you can get them easily once you have arrived in your new home.
