Distracted Driver

The Best way to learn more about any given subject, whether you’re trying to eliminate it or trying to just learn more about it, is to invest in it. Investing time, money, effort, anything. When we invest in something; we have the interest to gain something in it.
Investing as many things into driving under the influences and distracted driving is one major way that we can start to eliminate these major killers in the world (especially in the United States). CDC.gov states that each day, more than eight drivers are killed in the U.S. due to distracted drivers. This is a major problem because these are avoidable deaths that are occurring because people can’t wait to text or look back at something for a split second. Distraction.gov list a statistic; Looking away for 5 seconds at a speed of fifty-five miles per hour, a vehicle can travel the distance of a football field (2009, VTTI). The use of statistics and using outside sources to backup information shows that someone is investing time and money to this cause. Drunk and distracted driving is a huge cause of injury and death in the United States that hasn’t always had the attention that it deserves. An increase in attention and desire to solve this issue needs to prevalent within all communities, especially those who are most affected by these incidents. Humans have a hard time becoming involved in any given subject unless it personally affects them or it interests them. By making this subject a personal interest to many people, we can see an increase in productivity and knowledge about inebriated and distracted driving. By investing in this cause, we hope to learn more about why people do it, learn how to get through to the major offenders, and eventually learn how to prevent it. One of my brother’s friends in high school passed away due to drunk driving. He was headed home after a party and took a corner turn to sharp after the car had flipped and caught fire there was nothing that anyone could have done to help. To this day, the cross is visible on the roadside and serves as a reminder of the life of Chad and why it is so important to drive sober and to put down any distractions. We pay our respects on that long stretch of road once a year, but we think about Chad and the message that he left behind each time we pass by his cross. A catchy phrase like, “drive sober or get pulled over” or “click-it-or-ticket” can help prevent drivers from making simple but fatal mistakes because a catchy phrase can be remembered more easily and is likely to stay with you.
Driving distracted or with a substance coursing through you can seem innocent, especially if you are alone or on a back road, but you will pay the price when you drive this way. There is no such thing as an accident when all preventable risks are ignored. We can stop texting while driving, either by education or by installing a no-technology device into cars. If we want something bad enough, we’ll find a way to accomplish it.
I have lost a friend that texted while driving. Chad Albright was a senior when I was a freshman in high school. He was a relaxed and outgoing person. I can talk for a while about the person that Chad was, but I will keep this short. Chad passed away he crashed on his way home. There isn’t a week that goes by without thinking about his accident.
