Being a professional in the moving industry takes more than just owning a truck and being able to move some boxes. If you want to have any notoriety in the business, you need to be certified and recognized as a professional. The American Moving and Storage Association administers the ProMover certification program in the industry. This trade association provides several benefits for their members, helping them be leaders in the industry. 

What is the American Moving and Storage Association?

The American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) is a non-profit trade organization. The AMSA represents members of the professional moving industry, including over 4,000 members that consist of van lines, their agents, forwarders, independent movers, suppliers, and other individuals and organizations. The AMSA does not represent the self-storage industry.

The AMSA also administers the industry’s ProMover quality certification programs. The AMSA provides its members with professional training and certification programs that include federal government representation. The AMSA also provides arbitration services for loss or claims of damage, statistical industry reporting, federal government rate filing, public relations, annual quality and safety awards, safety and compliance guidance, and professional conferences.

The AMSA is headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia. They are affiliated with 27 state moving associations, as well as several international moving agencies. The Moving & Storage Institute was founded in 2001 to help sponsor industry research and provide scholarships.

AMSA Training Programs

The AMSA provides training opportunities to its members to ensure that they are educated and knowledgeable about the industry. This training includes staying up to date on all the newest practices, technology, safety, and regulations. The AMSA also offers ongoing training and development for specialized staffing as well as certification programs for those choosing a specialized career path.

Online Learning Programs

Training programs are available in an online format to make them easily accessible. When you become a member of the AMSA, you can get exclusive member pricing for these courses as well as other deals. On-demand webinars are available for a fee but are aimed to also aid in the personal development of teams.

These flexible training programs are meant to be taken in your own time, on your own schedule. Members can enjoy special pricing of $49 per course, and non-members are required $79 fees. For your convenience, the courses are color-coded so that you can find courses that may be of interest to you. 

  • Green: sales, marketing, and customer service
  • Purple: human resources, regulatory issues, claims, legal issues
  • Orange: safety courses and operations
  • Red: AMSA policy, advocacy, and members only

Certified Training In The Moving Industry

Certified Moving Consultant (CMC)

For over 35 years, the Certified Moving Consultant (CMC) credential has become one of the basic certifications to represent fundamental competency and adherence to ethical conduct. This applies to the sales force regarding household goods moving and in the storage industry. Consumers tend to be more confident when they are dealing with knowledgeable sales consultants that are committed to providing trustworthy service and excellence when they see the CMC certification logo.

The CMC Program

The CMC program is a program that is specifically designed for sales personnel in the household goods moving industry. Once completing the program successfully and passing the examination required, a Certified Moving Consultant can download and print a certificate of completion to be put on display.

After becoming a CMC, you can have your name added to the directory on Moving.org, which allows consumers to research on the website and see your credentials. To have these credentials listed on the website, CMCs pay annual fees of $150 to maintain their status on the site. This membership fee also includes free copies of Direction magazine and AMSA’s e-newsletter AMSA Today.

Certification Process

When ready to purchase the program, you will need an email available when you sign up. After purchasing, you will receive two emails. The first email is the confirmation of your purchase. The second email is the link you will need to follow to get to the AMSA eLearning system. Once you have logged in with your credentials, you can begin going through the program. It will be vital that you study the material and do the questions at the end of each section before moving on.

To be eligible for the program, individuals must be involved directly or indirectly with sales and marketing within a moving and storage service anywhere in the world. Both international and domestic applicants are welcome to apply but must be a member of the AMSA in good standing to be eligible for the program.

CMC Certification Manual

The certification manual that is currently used for the AMSA CMC course is compiled of nine sections. These sections cover a variety of topics that a sales consultant should be familiar with for them to offer competent services to the public. The sections of the manual include:

  • Section 1: Industrial History and Ethics
  • Section 2: Staying Legal
  • Section 3: Estimating
  • Section 4: Selling the Essentials
  • Section 5: Move
  • Section 6: Industry Accounting
  • Section 7: Introduction to the Claims Process
  • Section 8: Glossary

Section 9 is the testing section of the test. Once you have gone through all of the study topics for the program, you will need to agree to the testing agreement and the CMC Code of Ethics. When you agree to the terms, you will be allowed access to the CMC test. The test is up to 50 questions that are true or false and multiple choice. 

Once completed, your score will be immediately given, and you will be able to print off your certificate. In the event, you do not pass (which is unlikely), you will be given one more opportunity to take the CMC exam.

After passing the CMC exam and becoming certified as a CMC, you can purchase seals. These seals are a great way for customers to know that you represent the ethics of the industry, as well as the additional training you have received. By distinguishing yourself, you can rise above the competition and improve your sales.

Certified Office & Industrial Consultant (COIC)

The Certified Office & Industrial Consultant (COIC) program is designed specifically for sales personnel household goods in the moving industry. Once completing this program and passing the exam, a COIC can print their certificate and display it in their office. COICs can have their names added to the Moving.org registry with an annual fee of $150, like the CMC. These also include the complimentary issues of Direction and AMSA Today.

The Program

The COIC program requires an annual participation fee of $75, which is required to maintain the certification status. These consultants are recertified biannually based on the credits that they achieve in two categories, “Personal Growth” and “Industry and Program Growth”. A minimum of four points from each category must be earned every two years.

To be eligible for the program, individuals must be involved directly or indirectly with the sales and marketing of the moving and storage industry anywhere in the world. Both international and domestic applicants are welcome to apply as long as they are a member of the AMSA in good standing.

The Process

The same process applies to the COIC program as the CMC. The applicant will be required to supply an email address. The applicant will receive two emails. One will be the confirmation that the payment has been made, and the other will be the link for the training program. Once logging into the course, you will work your way through the sections to complete the certification test.

The Program

The COIC manual has a total of 9 sections (including the test). These topics cover the information that each sales consultant must become familiar with to be a professional sales and marketing services to the office and industrial sector of the business. The manual includes:

  • Section 1: Promoting Your Company
  • Section 2: Costing and Pricing Office and Industrial Moves
  • Section 3: Profitability
  • Section 4: Estimating
  • Section 5: Planning a Successful Office and Industrial Moves
  • Section 6: Managing an Office and Industrial Moves
  • Section 7: Introduction to Claims
  • Section 8: Ethical Standards and Antitrust Compliance

Once completing the program, you will be required to agree to the testing agreement and COIC Code of Ethics. Once you agree to these terms, you will be granted access to the COIC test. If you don’t pass the test the first time, you will be granted a second chance. 

The test is comprised of 50 questions that are true or false or multiple choice. Once the test is completed, it will be graded immediately, and the certificate will be available to print to display in your office.

The COIC seals are available for purchase and are an excellent way for your customers to know that you represent the ethics of the industry. You can use the seals to distinguish yourself from the competition to show yourself a highly trained expert in the industry.

Certified Packer/Loader (CPL)

AMSA’s Certified Packer/Loader Program delivers on-site training for employees of the moving industry. The company can buy the program once and train as many employees as they want, whenever they want. Once the training has been completed, employees will simply download the application for CPL status and fill it out for certification completion. 

The Program

Employees in a moving and storage company who have achieved the CPL certification are noted to have a reduced number of claims and better safety overall. The CPL is a disc that includes the introduction to moving and storage, loading, claims prevention through packing, safety, unloading, and reporting procedures courses. As an ASMA member, a company can purchase the disc for $400. The disc allows them to train as many people as necessary and as often as they want. 

After completing and filling out the application, your employee will receive a certificate that can be framed and included on the walls of the business. The certification shows consumers that the business has certified workers, and their work can be trusted. The workers will also receive a card showing their professional certification status. These certifications are what separate the moving labor worker from the moving professional. 

For a $50 fee per employee, they can take the test for certification, which allows them to receive CPL merchandise showing them as a professional and credentialed member of the AMSA.

Registered International Mover (RIM)

The Registered International Mover program through the AMSA has been established to help set universal standards for international moving companies and the personnel they hire. The RIM program has been taken to a higher level by creating the International ProMover certification, which provides customers relocation of goods and services from qualified and professional companies. 

The Program

RIM companies are certified through training, testing, and verification that these companies meet the standards to facilitate and handle the equipment necessary to safely and efficiently move household goods internationally. When the certifications are combined, RIM and ProMover, the company becomes an International ProMover designated mover. 


  • One year of experience in providing international household goods relocation services
  • Good standing member of the ASMA for at least 18 months
  • Hold a US or other country operating authority that is necessary to perform business legally
  • Must pass written exams on behalf of the company
  • RIM standards must be met by the company for equipment, security documentation, facilities, and be verified by random on-site inspections
  • Follow the International ProMover Code of Ethics
  • For re-certification eligibility, the company must have three members of the team certified
  • A Better Business Bureau rating of “B” or above, where Better Business Bureau ratings are available
  • Additional reviews by the AMSA staff of complaints
  • References from business partners

I considered selling my car when I moved to Washington. It was old and rusty, but I grew attached to it. So, I called a couple companies to transport it to my new home, but they both fell through.

The first one couldn’t decide on a schedule. He would constantly change the pickup date till I got frustrated and canceled. The second was insufferable, very rude on the phone, even worse in person.

They started picking a part my car asking me why I still have it. If that’s their opinion of my vehicle, how can I trust they’ll take care of it? If something happened midway, why wouldn’t they just blame it on the car instead of paying up?

So, I cancelled this company as well and turned to A1 Auto Transport. From the get go, they were very different from my past options. Their website was very professional and up to date, full of useful information. I requested a quote using their online form, and I got an email response within an hour. Surprisingly fast!

I can safely say this is a legit company that will get the job done.

There are a lot of options for auto transport these days, which surprisingly makes it harder to find a good company. I received more than 10 offers to ship my car, but I couldn’t decide on any of them.

We were abroad during the transport, so the transport was a bit tricky. The driver had to pick it up from storage on short notice and get it to its destination within at most 10 days.
