Buying a home in New Zealand is actually much quicker and less stressful than it is to buy a home in the U.S. Although you’ll need to meet certain restrictions, once you’re able to start seriously looking at properties, it’s not unfathomable to find a house in just a few weeks’ time. To make sure that you find the right home at the right price in the right location, it is best to hire an experienced real estate agent native to the country. Whether you’re still residing in the U.S. or already within NZ borders, your real estate agent will make your dream of finding the perfect home a reality. Your idea of moving to New Zealand will soon prove to have been more than worth the thought once you’re making friend with natives and enjoying all that the country has to offer.
It is common for changes to be made to the laws pertaining to buying real estate in New Zealand. For instance, the Overseas Investment Act once made it possible for overseas nationals to purchase homes on NZ land but according to more recent changes, only those with a resident visa and that have been living in the country for at least a year including at least 183 days in the previous year will have the opportunity to buy a home or property in the nation. This change in the law doesn’t pertain to those with permanent residency.
Deciding What You Want in a Home
New Zealand homes come in all sizes and styles. Some of the more popular housing styles include art deco, villa, seventies, state houses and bungalows. To help out your real estate agent with the process of finding your next home, write out a list of things you wish to have in a home. This may include the number of bedrooms needed, your desire for a pool in the backyard, the type of views you’d like, the location you’d like the home to be in, as well as any other amenities and features you’d like to have. Knowing what you want and having a strict budget will help your real estate agent condense the amount of properties they have to sort through.
As your agent provides you with properties in NZ for sale that they fit meet your criteria, try not to remain to stuck on your wants in a home. It is unlikely that you’ll get everything you want in a home within your budget, or even outside of your budget. Prioritize your wants in a home from what is necessary and what isn’t.
When you finally found the property you’d like to buy, the seller and buyer will need to agree on a price. Once everything is agreed upon and your bid is accepted, the real estate agents will draw up a contract much like they do for those buying homes in the U.S. Upon signing the contract, you cannot back out of your decision to purchase the home. Be sure to confirm the title and find legal counsel before paying for the property. Buying a house in New Zealand is similar to the process of buying a home in the United States. Make sure you are prepared for the home buying process and your overseas relocation. Once you purchase a home in the country, you may need to visit there right away to settle any contracts and paperwork for the purchase of your new home.
