Bay Area Problems: U-Haul Now Costs More Than A Moving Company
The San Francisco Bay Area has a moving problem, but it’s probably not what you think. Despite being at the center of the tech industry and experiencing years of steady growth, the Bay Area now has as many people leaving the region as there are moving in.
How does this affect the moving industry? The major change is how much you’ll pay if you need to rent a U-Haul to move out of the Bay Area. According to an article from Redfin, the real estate listing website, the Bay Area is currently experiencing the highest percentage of residents moving out of the area (more than any region in the U.S). Naturally, this creates more demand for moving trucks, of which there are progressively less available. The result is that prices have been raised substantially in the rent-a-truck moving business for those leaving the Bay Area.
In some cases, a truck rental for moving out of the region could cost upwards of ten times that of a truck rented for moving to the Bay Area. It seems somewhat of a drastic measure on the part of moving companies to raise prices so dramatically—something called “dynamic pricing,” which sounds much nicer than it is. And it is a huge price hike, but it’s not just because there’s a lot of people renting trucks.

Many of the trucks rented from U-Haul and other companies don’t come back to the area. That may sound strange at first, but if you’ve ever rented a U-Haul, part of the convenience is that you drop it off near your final destination. That’s still the case, but it means that trucks rented to move to Portland, Sacramento, or San Diego won’t be heading back as frequently as they once did. The combination of these two trends—more people moving away and less trucks for them to rent—puts truck rental companies in a position where they have no choice but to charge an enormous amount for what used to be an affordable alternative to hiring movers.
It now seems apparent that the tide has changed. With the do-it-yourself method of moving now costing as much or more than hiring someone else to do it for you, home movers have become an increasingly enticing option.
According to one article we came across while researching this topic, the cost of renting a truck from San Jose, CA to Las Vegas, NV would be close to $2,000.
To put that in perspective, a professional moving company could move the entire contents of a one bedroom apartment nearly twice as far for the same amount. And you wouldn’t even have to do any of the driving or heavy lifting. With home moving companies how being able to offer more convenience and equal or better pricing than truck rental services, it’s no wonder that Bay Area residents are changing their approach.
