What is the Affordable Long Distance Moving Services?

Hiring a moving company is not rocket science, but there are some things you’ll want to keep in mind during the initial phase, especially if you’re moving long distance. You should have no shortage of options when moving, and that includes everything from pricing to the type of moving services you need. Moving can be expensive and finding ways to save some money without sacrificing the quality of service is an important step in making the process as easy as possible. Below, you’ll find information about the factors that affect the cost and the areas where you can save a buck along the way.

Finding an affordable long distance moving company starts with the basic task of finding some companies—at least three, ideally—and getting a cost estimate from them. In order to get a price quote, you’ll need information such as where you currently live, where you’re moving to, and the amount of belongings you need moved. The best way to estimate how big of a truck and how many movers will be needed is the current size of the home or apartment you live in.

How the Cost of Moving Services Is Calculated

An in state move typically ranges from $1,000 to $2,000 while an out of state move tends to fall between $4,000 and $5,000. Of course, these numbers are general and the price will fluctuate based on how much furniture you have, as well as how many total miles you’re moving. While the size of your current living arrangement is a good place to start in estimating the cost of moving, it’s important to remember that cost is mostly predicated on weight. The heavier the load, the higher the fuel costs are for the moving company.

Another element that works in conjunction with the weight of your moving load is the total moving distance. Obviously, it costs more to move 6,000 pounds of household items 2,000 miles than it would to move the same amount 1,000 miles. By the same token, if you’re only moving 100 miles, you can expect the cost to be much lower. It should be noted that local moves are usually billed by man hours, while long distance moves are often priced out as a flat rate, provided there are no extra services requested. These extra services include things like:

  • White glove moving services
  • Furniture disassembly and reassembly
  • Packing assistance and supplies
  • Additional man power
  • Storage facilities
  • Additional insurance coverage
  • Expedited and last minute jobs
  • Items required special equipment (safes, pianos, etc.)

Make Sure Your Mover Has Insurance Coverage

You’d be making a huge mistake by not insuring your possessions as they’re with the moving company. It is true that you can rely on your mover to handle your goods with great care, but even with all the necessary precautions in place, accidents can still happen. It doesn’t happen often, but when accidents happen a moving company can only replace an item if it is under insurance coverage. Fortunately, state laws require licensed movers to offer at least the minimal amount of insurance coverage as set by the state they’re located in. Many long distance moving companies will allow their customers to purchase additional coverage through them.

An often overlooked part of moving costs and services is insurance. All moving companies must carry a minimum amount of insurance (see link under “resources”) by law and some states themselves have minimums that apply beyond the federal level. Any licensed and insured mover—which they all should be if they work in the industry—will insure your items anywhere from $3 to $7 per pound. While this system works fine since damages rarely occur, you may want to consider purchasing additional insurance if your moving anything of high value such as antiques or collectibles. Most moving companies will offer a higher level of coverage for a small fee and, if they don’t, you may want to seek out another option.
