Springfield is the state capital and is located in the central part of Illinois. Originally settled by trappers and traders in 1818, the city was called Calhoun. Named for a US Senator who eventually fell out of public favor and the city was renamed Springfield in 1832. The numerous routes through the metropolis allow it to be a major hub for transportation and enable such industries as auto shipping.
Interstate Highway 55 runs north and south through Springfield and Interstate 72 runs east and west. Historic route 66 also bisects the area. Auto transport and car shipping vehicles travel the roads daily from across the country. Dozens of corporate and privately owned auto shipping companies reside here. Numerous private freight and multitudes of common freight railroads travel the many miles of railways through the city. The railroad car transporters travel to and from various destinations located in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, Wisconsin, Virginia and Canada.
The city contains many attractions and amenities for auto transport vehicle drivers to see when passing through. Abraham Lincoln lived here, raised his family here, and worked as an attorney and statesman in Springfield. In his honor, the Lincoln Visitor Center was built. The home where he lived, the office where he worked and all the buildings he was associated with during his lifetime are local historic landmarks. The site of Lincoln's tomb is also in Springfield.
Springfield honors those who have served the community and the country. Veterans from the Civil War, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War are commemorated in numerous military museums and war memorials dedicated to each battle. Special museums honor police officers and firefighters. The All Presidents Library and Museum welcomes visitors daily, as does the Executive Mansion, home of the Illinois governor and 7 US Presidents.
Over a dozen parks are located throughout the city with walking and hiking trails in addition to picnic areas. Car transport drivers taking Route 66 will find it offers much in the way of memorabilia to this legendary highway. Many businesses along the route showcase their antiques. The Dream Car Museum is locally owned and operated housing some of the most sought after cars in auto history. The Cozy Dog Drive In/Diner is the location where corndogs were invented.
